POLICE CLAMP DOWN ON WILDLIFE CRIME: FOUR ARRESTED AND TWO PANGOLINS RESCUED
Four suspects were arrested for the alleged unlawful possession of endangered species after two live pangolins were found inside a vehicle during an intelligence-led operation at Waterfall Mall in Rustenburg on Wednesday, 04 November 2026.
The operation followed information received by Crime Intelligence (CI) Ivory Park, regarding a group of suspects who were allegedly involved in the illegal trade of endangered species. The information indicated that the suspects were in possession of two female pangolins, which they intended to sell to potential buyers for approximately R500 000-00 each.
Following the information, a cross-border, multidisciplinary team comprising members of Crime Intelligence Ivory Park and North West, SAPS Ivory Park Task Team, Phokeng K9, Rustenburg Tactical Response Team (TRT) and Safeguard Risk Services was assembled and deployed to the area.
The team proceeded to the parking lot at a Mall in Rustenburg and kept observation. A white BMW, in which the suspects were travelling, was seen entering the mall and was intercepted by the operational team.
Permission to search the vehicle was granted and upon searching the vehicle, two live pangolins were found inside the boot. When questioned about the endangered species, the four suspects, aged between 38 and 51, could not give a reasonable explanation and were subsequently arrested for unlawful possession of endangered species.
The vehicle was also found to be affixed with false registration plates. It was seized for further investigation.
Members of the Rustenburg Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC) and the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment were called to the scene. The two pangolins were rescued and taken for safety purposes by members of the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment.
The estimated value of the pangolins is +-R1 000 000.00(One Million Rands)
Further investigations are continuing to establish the suspects' criminal network.
The suspects are expected to appear before the Rustenburg Magistrates' Court on Friday, 06 November 2026, to face charges of unlawful possession of endangered species in contravention of the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act, 10 of 2004.
The Provincial Commissioner of the North West, Lieutenant General Arthur Peter Adams, commended all the units involved for their excellent collaboration and swift action that led to the rescue of the pangolins and the arrest of the suspects. He emphasised that the SAPS remains committed to protecting the country's endangered species and bringing those involved in wildlife crime to justice.

THREE LIFE SENTENCES FOR MAN CONVICTED OF 119 CHILD SEXUAL OFFENCES
-WELKOM, FREE STATE
The NPA has welcomed the sentencing of 37-year-old Christiaan Francisco Fortleza van der Linde, who received three life imprisonment sentences after pleading guilty to 119 charges involving the sexual abuse and exploitation of three minor children.
The offences occurred between 2015 and 2024 and included rape, sexual assault, grooming, child trafficking, kidnapping, attempted murder and the creation, possession and distribution of child sexual abuse material.
The accused exploited positions of trust to groom and repeatedly abuse his victims, aged between 11 and 17.
He also created and distributed sexually explicit material involving children.
In one particularly disturbing incident, he kidnapped and trafficked a second victim and attempted to murder the child in an attempted murder-suicide.
The Welkom Regional Court imposed:
Three life sentences for two counts of rape and trafficking in persons.
Additional prison terms for attempted murder, sexual exploitation, grooming and other offences.
Entry into the National Register for Sex Offenders.
He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm, prohibited from working with children and barred from possessing or using electronic devices while serving his sentence.
The court rejected the defence’s request to deviate from the prescribed minimum sentences, agreeing with the State that the crimes formed part of a calculated and sustained pattern of abuse.
The NPA highlighted the devastating psychological impact on the victims, with two reportedly becoming suicidal as a result of the abuse.
The NPA says the sentence demonstrates its commitment to protecting children and ensuring that those who exploit and abuse vulnerable minors face the full consequences of the law.

EXTRADITION HEARING POSTPONED PENDING FINALISATION OF FIREARM CASE AGAINST ALLEGED UK FUGITIVE
@NPA_Prosecutes
The extradition proceedings against alleged United Kingdom fugitive, 46-year-old Ndodana Mkhanyisi Tshuma, have been postponed by the Johannesburg Magistrates' Court to 7 December 2026.
The postponement will allow for the finalisation of the Mutual Legal Assistance (MLA) process and the conclusion of plea and sentencing proceedings in his firearm and ammunition case, which are scheduled for 10 November 2026.
The United Kingdom authorities submitted a request for Mutual Legal Assistance to South Africa, seeking the handover of electronic devices seized from Tshuma.
The request was authorised by the Minister of Justice in terms of Section 7 of the International Cooperation in Criminal Matters Act 75 of 1996.
Following consideration of the evidence presented, the court granted the order sought in terms of the MLA request. The cellphone will accordingly be handed over to the United Kingdom authorities to assist with their investigations into the murder charges Tshuma faces in that country.
Tshuma has entered into a plea and sentence agreement with the State in terms of Section 105A of the Criminal Procedure Act. In terms of the agreement, he pleaded guilty to charges relating to the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, as well as contravening the Immigration Act.
Tshuma is wanted in the United Kingdom on three counts of murder. It is alleged that, in early July 2026, in Bedford, Bedfordshire, he murdered his wife, Nothabo Zandile Tshuma, and their two children, Natalie Tshuma and Nala Tshuma.
The NPA is ready to proceed with the extradition proceedings and remains committed to ensuring that the matter is dealt with expeditiously and in accordance with the law.

BMA INTENSIFIES CLEAN-UP OF BORDER ENVIRONMENT IN COLLABORATION WITH SAPS
The Acting Commissioner of the Border Management Authority (BMA), Maj Gen (rtd) David Chilembe, has confirmed that working in close collaboration with the South African Police Service (SAPS), the BMA continues to intensify efforts to root out corruption and criminality within the border environment as part of its ongoing commitment to strengthening integrity, accountability and law enforcement at South Africa’s ports of entry.
The BMA confirms that two officials, Msebenzi Abednigo Mgobo and Mbuso Mnisi, who were arrested in connection with alleged corruption, fraud and immigration offences at the Emahlathini Border Gate in Mpumalanga, have appeared before the Piet Retief Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 3 November 2026, following their arrest on Monday, 2 November 2026.
Preliminary investigations have revealed allegations that one of the suspects collected passports from individuals in Gauteng and transported them to the Emahlathini border gate, where the passports were allegedly stamped in exchange for payment. These allegations are serious and undermine the integrity of immigration processes and the security of South Africa's borders. The criminal case is before the relevant court and we trust in the law that consequence management will prevail.
One of the arrested officials had previously come under the BMA's scrutiny following concerns relating to the processing of an individual who had been flagged on the law enforcement systems as a wanted suspect. This matter formed part of the broader integrity concerns being investigated by the Authority.
“The BMA wishes to clarify that the arrests were not isolated developments but formed part of an ongoing internal clean-up process driven by its Integrity Management Unit. Approximately two weeks before the arrests, the officials were already under internal investigation by the BMA's Integrity Management Unit, which had recommended that appropriate disciplinary action be instituted against them. The matter had also been referred to SAPS for criminal processing. The subsequent arrests therefore coincided with an already established process of addressing suspected corruption within the Authority, demonstrating the importance of cooperation between the BMA and SAPS in confronting criminality within the border environment”, Acting Commissioner David Chilembe said.
The Authority further confirms that the internal investigation against the implicated officials has been finalised and the disciplinary process will be instituted.
The BMA reiterates that it will not tolerate corruption, abuse of authority or any conduct that undermines the integrity of border management operations. Officials entrusted with securing the country's borders are expected to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity and accountability.
Working alongside SAPS and other law enforcement agencies, the BMA remains committed to continuously cleaning up the border environment, strengthening internal controls and ensuring that those who engage in corrupt activities face the consequences of their actions.
“The Authority will continue to pursue all credible allegations of corruption through its internal disciplinary mechanisms and in collaboration with law enforcement agencies. These efforts form part of the BMA's broader commitment to building a professional, ethical and corruption-free border management environment”, added Acting Commissioner David Chilembe.

NPA SECURES 20-YEAR PRISON SENTENCE FOR STOKVEL ARMED ROBBER
@NPA_Prosecutes
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomes the Nkowankowa Magistrate's Court's effective 20-year direct imprisonment sentence for Matimba Power Oscar Nhlangwana (25) on two counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances.
The conviction stems from an incident on 14 June 2023 in Myakayaka village, outside Tzaneen. Nhlangwana and two accomplices targeted a local stokvel gathering where members were counting their monthly financial contributions.
The victims were held at gunpoint and robbed of R12 000.
The State subsequently opened a case of robbery with aggravating circumstances, leading to Nhlangwana’s arrest and prosecution.
In aggravation of sentence, State Prosecutor Lerato Thandy Madia argued that the victims had been robbed of their hard-earned communal savings.
Madia further submitted that there were no substantial and compelling circumstances justifying a deviation from the prescribed minimum sentence of 15 years' direct imprisonment on each count.
The court sentenced Nhlangwana to 15 years' direct imprisonment on each count. It ordered that 10 years of the sentence imposed on count two run concurrently with the 15-year sentence on count one, resulting in an effective sentence of 20 years' direct imprisonment.
Welcoming the sentence, the Director of Public Prosecutions in Limpopo, Advocate Ivy Thenga, expressed hope that the sentence would serve as a deterrent to would-be offenders who target stokvels and other community savings initiatives. Advocate Thenga also commended the prosecutor and investigating team for their diligent work in securing the conviction and sentence.
