At Malala Fund, we work to secure stronger education budgets and make sure girls have a say in how that money is spent. In Bauchi state, Nigeria, 17-year-old Sharon got to have her say. At a workshop organised by @YoungLeadersN, with support from Malala Fund, Sharon sat alongside government officials and education leaders to share what girls actually need from education budgets. And she's proud to know those leaders took her ideas seriously. Girls like Sharon aren't waiting to be heard. They're already helping shape decisions about their education. 💚

Economists have a term for things that can make or break a country’s economy: macrocritical. It’s applied to food costs, oil prices and exchange rates — but rarely to education. Across 113 countries, governments now spend more on debt than on educating their children. Our new brief makes the case that education — girls' education above all — is macrocritical and details how policymakers can better protect it from the debt squeeze. Heartbreaking and utterly devastating. No child should lose their life in a place meant for learning and hope. My deepest condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones. Every child deserves a safe school, and every life lost is a reminder of our responsibility to protect them.

What does it look like to meaningfully engage men and boys in advancing girls’ education? For our co-founder Ziauddin Yousafzai, allyship goes beyond supporting girls’ education. It takes the courage to challenge harmful norms and speak up when girls’ rights and choices are being denied. Our research explores how intentional, accountable engagement with men and boys can help break down barriers and create lasting change for girls in Nigeria. When Samuel saw how early marriage had cut short the education of girls in his family, he wanted a different future for his daughter, Deborah. Today, Deborah is an advocate for girls’ education, using her voice to push for change. Samuel is proof that men and boys have a role to play in challenging the norms that hold girls back, so every girl can learn and choose her own future. On August 26, flash floods swept through northern Nepal, disrupting education for more than 14,000 children and destroying or damaging at least 23 schools. Malala Fund is announcing $150,000 in grants to RDC Nepal and RUDEC Nepal to provide safe learning spaces and psychosocial support for adolescent girls, who are often the last to return to school when disaster strikes. ➡️ Support these local organisations directly: rudecnepal.org.np/donate rdcnepal.com

From Nigeria and Tanzania to Pakistan and Brazil, girls are telling us what it takes to stay in school. Some face pressure to marry young, some walk hours to get to school and others deal with discrimination in their communities. Our partners are helping them overcome these barriers, so they can choose what comes next. This International Day of the Girl, invest in her so she can keep moving forward. 🌱 Donate today: mala.la/idg

The #ICC has unsealed arrest warrants for four Taliban leaders, including their Supreme Leader, for persecuting women and girls. Two are named for the first time. Afghan women documented this at enormous risk. We hope this decision makes it harder for governments to look away or normalise the Taliban.

Five years. More than 200 edicts. Afghan women are still waiting for justice. At the Goals Lounge during #UNGA81, @Malala, @GaisuY, @Metra_Mehran and @AsilaA were clear: what the Taliban have built is gender apartheid, and it must be named as a crime against humanity. So far, 14 countries have endorsed codifying gender apartheid in the Crimes Against Humanity Treaty. We urge every government to join them. Thank you to @IrishMissionUN and @UN_Partnerships for co-hosting. #GenderApartheid #AfghanWomen #StandWithAfghanWomen #UNGA81
