This Islamophobia Awareness Month, we must shine a light on the abhorrent hatred and discrimination Muslims continue to face. In the last year alone, religious hate crimes targeting Muslims rose by 15% in England and Wales. This is utterly unacceptable. London will always stand against hatred, prejudice and discrimination.

It was 10 years ago today my best mate James came running out of the room shouting, "It's a boy!" with tears streaming down his face. We never went back to Thailand.

Today Restore Britain published our veterans policy: A Home Fit for Heroes. Britain must properly look after the men and women who served in our Armed Forces. Our proposals are substantial. We will create a dedicated Department of Veterans’ Affairs, led by a Cabinet-level Secretary of State - one place responsible for welfare, pensions, compensation, housing, healthcare and employment support. Every local authority will have a Veterans Officer who can actually get things done. One point of contact. We will scrap NHS prescription and dental charges for qualifying veterans and their immediate families. Free eye and hearing tests too. Where NHS dentistry isn’t available, we’ll fund private treatment. Veterans will get statutory priority for social housing. No one who served this country should be sleeping on the streets. No one. We’ll fund retraining for veterans whose military qualifications aren’t recognised in civilian life, plus lifelong employment support. We’ll also actively recruit former service personnel into the police, emergency services, prisons, border force and immigration enforcement. Pensions and compensation will be brought under the new department. Bereaved families will get dedicated support, and we’ll introduce a funeral contribution for veterans whose deaths were not service-related. We will legislate to stop malicious legal actions against veterans. We will not tolerate endless legal harassment of those who served — and we will pursue those who make vindictive complaints. We’ll introduce a statutory Veterans Charter giving qualifying veterans enforceable rights, not just goodwill. We’re tired of veterans being treated as an afterthought. Some came home with life-changing injuries. Others lost friends, colleagues and years with their families. They did their duty for Britain. It is time Britain did its duty for them.
