This magnificent beast is a Pilbara endemic: the Pilbara Cave gecko (Heternotia spelea). While Heternotia are generally regarded among herpetologists as "the best geckos", H. spelea is usually considered as one of the "best of the best". #herping #wildoz #gecko #hetlyf #Hetisbest

Big drive yesterday & landed in Parkes for some real work. Of course the camera accompanied me - lucky too. Some breathtaking birb watching is a pure bonus. Details in the Alt-text as usual. #wildoz #ozbirds #wildlifephotography

NOT A SNAKE! This really beautiful little creature called a Delma. They're related to geckos, are almost limbless and are cute as buttons, either as a baby (left) or as a big stonking adult (right). #wildoz

While the #Pilbara is an OK birding destination, the best thing about the joint (and indeed many places) is the lizards. This particularly handsome species is the Spotted Ctenotus (Ctenotus uber). They love the heavy soils & hard country. Great lizards, cute as a button! #wildoz

Lots and lots of the worlds best bird: the budgerigar. They were coming in to a drying water hole- by the end of the survey the water was gone and so were the birds. No more finches, budgies or chats. #wildoz #pilbara #birding

Managed to find a couple of Mulga Dragon (Diporiphora amphiboluroides) on this survey too. Strangely none went into the traps and were instead found resting on dead timber. #wildoz #pilbara

Abundance of grasshoppers meant there were Australian bustards around. I even saw a tiny baby, so conditions have been good enough for them to breed. #wildoz #pilbara

I was up in the Pilbara a week or so ago on a survey. One of the highlights was seeing the disjunct "occidentalis" race of the Blue-winged kookaburra. They differ by having a blue tail and an unmarked head- really handsome birds. #wildoz #pilbara

BOOOOM, Marcelina has just pushed another 527 kms northwest, currently on the Newcastle Creek between Daly Waters and Tennant Creek! She is now over 2100 kms from her spring home in Balranald. This is incredible to witness.
