Here is an ongoing list of competitions for students to enter - some many not necessarily jump out as 'geography' but what's stopping your students entering science and English compeitions when using a geographical theme? docs.google.com/document/d/1…
Every geography teacher should read this!
What happens when a learner understands geography but struggles to express that understanding in the language of assessment?
Drawing on South African geography classrooms, Krystle Ontong and Koketso Khule consider how oracy, dialogue, home languages, local knowledge and place-based experiences can support geographical understanding and more equitable participation in multilingual settings.

I personally do not know any enquiry-based teachers who advocated for knowledge/explicit instruction NOT to be in enquiry. How do I know this…because I explicitly told people 😉
I have been waiting for this blog. Since working in 100% EAL schools for the last 7 years I chose to complete a masters in TESOL & Ed. as a Geog teacher - why, because oracy is just as important as being able to write it down for multilingual students.
NEW POST: Towards powerful oracy for all. Policy and practice; possibilities and pitfalls teacherhead.com/2026/10/25/t…
To achieve top marks in the language section students must ‘ response uses consistently precise and effective language that actively strengthens the argument.’ that language has to be taught by the teacher for the student to be able to do it, it doesn’t magically happen!
I have just seen a tweet that claims oracy is a progressive form of teaching. Allowing students to debate, give persuasive speech or even a teacher keeping a log of when a student uses the correct t linguistic term as part of the ‘we do’ section is seen as progressive

Anyone want to play 'Circle The Inaccuracies In A Single Paragraph'?
Happy to advise on a rewrite, @HodderEducation
No one loves children like Türks and I will die on that hill.
Cenâb-ı Hak bütün evlatlarımızı her türlü afetten muhafaza eylesin. Bahtlarını açık, ömürlerini hayırlı eylesin.
After working in the independent sector for half my teaching career I can categorically say it pains me to see teachers who do not think oracy matters. I know this because of my experience in taking students (and coaching) public speaking competitions.
