New essay out today on the long deep history of subjectivity, technologies of communication and of the self, and the surprising loop-backs of our world of digital lives and AI agents into that of the Paleolithic, link below:

I don't actually know whether there is more than a marginal chance that the United States is going to use a nuclear weapon against Iran but the fact that it is not outside the realm of possibility right now makes me feel sick to my stomach

Honestly cannot predict what my response would be if the US did carry out nuclear strikes on Iran but I can't imagine it'll be something I'd post on here

Back in the day scholars would just be like "I didn't like or understand some chunks of this text so I just chunked them from my translation" and everyone was cool with it

The opening page to a 13th or 14th century Psalter in- from left to right- Ge'ez, Syriac, Coptic, Arabic, and Armenian, presumably produced in a Syriac milieu (Vatican Barb.or.2):

Racism is first and foremost an evil against one's neighbor, but it's also a type of self-harm, a vulgar denigration of the spirit, an internal hollowing out the effects of which upon the racist are truly pathetic
Went to a pumpkin patch in a bigger town. 200 million deportations. Minimum.

Most depressing but also least surprising aspect of today's Gospel reading (the story of Lazarus and the rich man) is the (unnamed) rich man recognizing Lazarus and knowing his name but only because suddenly he found the poor man formerly at his gate potentially useful to himself

The rich man even in the torment of Hades automatically thinks "insofar as the poor and marginalized exist it's to serve MY needs," though at least in his second request he tries to instrumentalize Lazarus to warn his brothers, a slight progression from his initial reaction

Abdul Sayed has never supported Islamism or advocated for any kind of violence. But here’s Eli Lake wearing a tshirt of Menachem Begin who led a Zionist militant group that bombed the King David Hotel, killing almost one hundred people.
Does the left understand how ridiculous it looks to claim anti-Sayed Democrats are more loyal to Israel than America, while simultaneously claiming that any inquiry into El-Sayed’s very real links to the Muslim Brotherhood is an unwarranted attack on his patriotism?

Life is beautiful and the core of my political project really is to defend the beauty of life against the forces of capital and state that would seek to extirpate it

It's fun to think about how if instead of devoting vast resources and human intelligence to the most dystopian life-negating shit imaginable we had spent the capital of industrial modernity on building socially vibrant life-affirming worlds centered on human dignity and value
We believe voice is the most natural way to interact with intelligence, so we created Dessa, the most authentic full-duplex speech model ever built. Talking with it feels like talking with a person…full of emotion, nuance, pauses, and a natural cadence. block.xyz/dessa

The miniatures in the 1180 Coptic Gospel BnF Copte 13 must surely rank among the loveliest and most charming in all medieval art yet my sense is they're barely known even among scholars of the period; here are a couple water-centric examples:

Here is Christ being arrested, with Arabic captions and, following a practice common in Islamicate book culture, Judas' face has been deliberately defaced:

This material *really is* from the 12th century, and it's so much more wonderful and meaningful than AI could come up with

Two illumined pages from a gorgeously rendered Coptic Arabic Old Testament (partial- up to Chronicles) produced in Ottoman Egypt in 1760, that multicolored calligraphy is just wonderful (CAJS Rar Ms 166)
