President Trumpβs trade war with Canada assumed economic size would translate into bargaining power. Ottawaβs refusal to back down, and the strain the tariffs are putting on U.S. border states ahead of the midterms, are opening cracks in the administrationβs approach, argues expert @edwardalden.
"With Republicans facing tough midterm election races in northern border states that are heavily dependent on trade with Canada, it is the United States that now appears to be backing down by lifting tariffs that are causing too much economic harm. Other countries that will face at least another two years of Trumpβs trade bullying, regardless of the midterm outcomes, have much to learn from Canadaβs response," he writes.
"Most of the major economies, from Europe to Japan and South Korea, have cut deals with the United States to accept higher tariffs in exchange for some trade peace. Canada stands alone in resisting U.S. demands. But so far, it seems to be standing tall."

This is so perfect. Honestly, I thought "Tommy" was a plant by the way he walked off at the end. Abdul El-Sayed just looks too good here.
But after looking it up, I learned he was a former Josh Hawley staffer.
This is the most inspiring performance by an American politician that I can remember seeing.
El-Sayed was faced with a bigoted question. He didn't hide from it or pander. He broke down why it was a bigoted question, and gave a stirring defense of American principles and the Constitution.
At the end, his interlocutor wouldn't condemn Christian Nationalism! El-Sayed has a perfect response to this, and "everybody clapped."
A lot of us have had this experience of arguing with right-wingers, questioning them, and then finding out that they have no principles, they're just bigots. A Hawley staffer will talk about the US Constitution and freedom of religion to attack a Muslim politician, and sing a completely different tune when it comes to Christian fundamentalists.
Again, the "everybody clapped" nature of this, followed by Tommy walking off in shame, made me think that he was a plant.
But no. This was a real-life rightoid, getting exposed as the hateful, hypocritical bigot that he is in front of the entire world.
Abdul El-Sayed's rise in American politics has made me a lot more optimistic about our future.
Telling on themselves again.
Pete Hoekstra, the U.S. ambassador to Canada, is warning Canadian politicians to stay out of American politics, saying officials are monitoring potential βpolitical interference in the U.S. midterms.β

There is no such thing as race. But back when white people believed race was a scientific concept, Hispanics and southern Mediterraneans werenβt white. By his own standard Dale Partridge is in an interracial marriage.
Hereβs the thing. I donβt want a bot to shop online for me or order pizza. Those are fun and relaxing things. I want a robot to cut my lawn and wash the car and fold the laundry.
BREAKING: Zuckerberg just described the near-future of computing, and it has nothing to do with screens.
His call: within 5 years, every person on Earth has a personal AI that knows their life, understands their goals, and does the work for them.
Not a chatbot. Not a search box.
An agent that is deeply, intimately embedded in how you live.
When the person building the social layer for 3 billion people says this is where we're going, it's not a prediction.
It's a roadmap.
Is the personal AI agent the most valuable product anyone can build right now?
Iβm not a potash expert but even someone with a cursory knowledge can tell you this isnβt true.
Not sure if sheβs angry that itβs made in the USA, that itβs vegetarian, that it has a weirdly short shelf life once the package is opened, or that itβs halal. Obviously the issue for me, as a Canadian, would be the country of origin. If it says βMade in the USA,β I put it back.

Today is the last day to request a special ballot (mail-in) for the referendum. Election day will be a complete mess, so avoid the lines and vote by mail. specialballot.elections.ab.cβ¦

A new poll from respected pollster Janet Brown shows support for separatism is falling. Thatβs good news. But we canβt be complacent. Letβs seal the deal by ALL voting in the referendum. Vote to remain in Canada and vote NO to Smithβs nine other MAGA-style rage-bait questions!
Things arenβt going well for Mr. Rath.

David's getting on board with Carney's Davos speech.
As a Canadian, the only place I ever hear about medical assistance in dying is on twitter, where it seems to be an evergreen topic for the American right. They'd be surprised to learn that up here, it's a total non-issue.
Hereβs the thing. Never sacrifice your kid on the altar of your own desire/interests/ideals. The only question that matters is, is this the best place for them? Are they getting what they need? Theyβll tell you. theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0β¦
