The Salaf (or al-salaf al-salih, the 'righteous predecessors') are the first three righteous generations of Muslims.
They are:
- The noble Companions (Sahabah) of the prophet peace be upon him. May God be pleased with them all.
- The Successors (Tābi'ūn).
- The Successors of the Successors (Atbā' al-Tābi'īn)
The Sunnah is what is narrated about the prophet (pbuh) of his words, actions, or tacit approvals.
Following the Sunnah and following the Salaf are considered the exact same path because to follow the Sunnah is to follow the footsteps of those who walked it first. This is not only an obligation, but it is also a profound privilege.
Following the Salaf is therefore not a sect nor is it a new phenomenon. It is integral to being part of the united Islamic community: Ahl al-Sunnah wa'l-Jama'ah.
May God keep us guided, protect our hearts and minds, and strengthen our faith.
