Again, I know we have more important things to deal with on this hellsite, but I have stitches in my eye and painkillers in my system and I don't feel I can properly opine on Ukraine right now, so instead I'm going to jump into the gender-war sloppool. I write for fun - instead of watching or reading other people's work, I mostly find it more cathartic to write my own stories. For more than ten years, I've noodled on a historical fiction/romance in an alternate reality where Britain won the Revolutionary War but the Americans didn't give up and formed a resistance group called Thirteen. It started as a silly romance and then somehow spiraled into a long-winded "But what if Benedict Arnold actually succeeded in betraying America?". It's all very complicated and I use Boston as an analogue for my experience in a bunkered-down city (Kabul) and how unique and ridiculous "security theater" can be, transposed onto a historical setting. (Really I started writing this because I love the history of the Revolutionary War like no other time period and wanted an excuse to travel up and down the East Coast visiting battlefields, touring historical homes, and researching the time period) And through research, it is clear that while it is fun to imagine yourself as Lizzy Bennet, spending your days drawing and mooning over a handsome man, the average human being, male AND female, was so preoccupied with the business of survival that only a very, very VERY small percentage of women and men were of the "do music and painting" class. Humanity has been almost entirely carried forward on the backs of servants, laborers, slaves, merchants, sailors, adventurers, soldiers, and everyone else who wasn't part of that teeny-tiny privileged class. That mass of humanity lived challenging lives filled with danger and extremely hard work - yes, men did the truly difficult work but "women's work" in or out of the home, for the VAST majority of women, was not easy, nor fun, and definitely not confined to painting. Think of the Radium Girls, or those who died in the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire. Lana, I hate to say it, but with or without feminism, you probably would have been working anyway or performing punishing hard labor to keep your own household alive and running while also facing a massive chance of dying in childbirth or from a small cut on your leg that gets infected and then you die of sepsis. It is important that men and women alike don't romanticize the past as somehow "better" because one -ism or another didn't exist.

Imagine being this man, trying to save his people/culture from destruction, watching russians murder tiny babies, old people and bread van drivers for funsies, and having to treat Kushner/Witkoff as if they were humans with human feelings. He is truly God's strongest soldier.
