Trump is the first openly expansionist president in generations.
But he’s governing in the least expansionist era in American history.

Today in 1813 British, Canadians & Indians led by General Charles de Salaberry, repelled an American force roughly twice as large in the Battle of the Chateauguay. This was one of two victories which thwarted the American plan to conquer Montreal. 🇬🇧/🇺🇸
I had a great conversation with @historywjackson about the history of annexation movements targeting Cuba, Hawaiian island claims that never became American, why Puerto Rico isn’t a state, and much more: historywithjackson.co.uk

Trump: I got Greenland. I hope you're happy about that. Remember they all said, “oh he's never going to get it” We got it—and for the right price.

Greenland remains under Danish sovereignty as a self-governing territory. The 2026 US-Denmark-Greenland agreement expands American military access and cooperation but transfers no ownership or control of the island itself.

Forty years ago, America added land for the last time. Donald Trump wants to bring back annexation, but I explain in @Salon why he's likely to fail - and why an obscure Pacific archipelago will probably remain the country's last territorial addition.

#OTD, the Battle of Valcour Island took place. While an American defeat, the battle for control of New York’s Lake Champlain delayed the British plan to divide the 13 states in two. Their next attempt in 1777 would end near Saratoga, New York and the surrender of a British army.
Notice how Texas’s border wasn’t always the Rio Grande.

America, but Bigger does not explore American attempts to conquer or annex the moon, unfortunately.
Who Owns the Moon?
In the 70s, the Moon Treaty declared lunar resources a common heritage of humankind and insisted upon international governance of their exploitation.
Only 17 countries agreed to the treaty. USA, USSR and China did not.

Thanks, Greg Berg, for a great conversation on @WGTDFM's The Morning Show. We talked about the history of the U.S. trying to annex Canada, the definition of annexation, islands that Commodore Perry might have annexed on his voyage to Japan, and much more.
