In the days leading up to Remembrance Day, I will be profiling the stories of Canada's soldiers.
Today, it is Thain MacDowell.
ALT On April 9, 1917, during the Battle of Vimy Ridge, Thain MacDowell reached a German position with two company orderlies. He destroyed a machine gun nest and chased a crew from another. He then bluffed a group of Germans in a tunnel that he was part of a much larger force. They believed him and MacDowell was able to capture 75 Germans. Despite a wound to his hand, he spent five days holding the position that had been gained amid heavy shellfire. He was promoted to Major and received the Victoria Cross.

On this day in 1951, a platoon of 28 soldiers from the Royal Canadian Regiment fight off repeated assaults by an 800-man Chinese battalion in the Battle of the Song-gok Spur. The Canadians hold out for eight hours and suffer more than a dozen wounded and one killed.
