Books starting to trickle in for a chapter on the significance of the hearth in the Irish household. Not just functionally (heat, cooking). Culturally (rambling, storytelling, family gathering, social focus). The hearth - the fireplace and chimney - are essential cultural artefacts.
The current drive to remove chimneys and fireplaces from homes is a profound act of cultural sabotage. Yes, the role of the fireplace is radically reduced in modern life but removing them from homes places a brick wall between the past and the present. It prevents people bringing forward an important element of their cultural inheritance.

By the way, in 2005, Taoiseach Bertie Ahern offered to "bring" Enda Kenny through the "defence agreement" with Britain, given Enda's status as "Leader of the Opposition"
If Mary Lou McDonald hadn't given up the ghost, she would be demanding the same courtesy for the updated Memorandum of Understanding. Instead, the MOU which was signed by Helen McEntee on behalf of Ireland in March 2026 remains concealed from the nation.
Former justice minister (2002-2007) and Tanaiste (2006-7) Michael McDowell says he doesn't know what is in the 2005 agreement between Ireland and the UK for allowing British airforce planes to enter Irish airspace.
Were ye asleep at the wheel Michael? Here is Bertie in 2005 in the Dail confirming a "pre-agreed understanding".

BREAKING:
The European Commission announced today which countries are under “migratory pressure” and will be able to send away some of their asylum seekers to other EU states under the “migrant relocation quotas” created by the EU’s new Migration Pact. The countries are:
🇪🇸 Spain
🇮🇹 Italy
🇬🇷 Greece
🇨🇾 Cyprus
These 4 countries will be able to put asylum seekers into a “Solidarity Pool” for 2027 from which migrants will then be relocated in other EU states.
The size of the Solidarity Pool was decided today but the information about it is being kept secret for now.
6 countries were classified as facing a “significant migratory situation” and will be allowed to request from exemptions of receiving quota migrants. Those 6 countries are:
🇵🇱 Poland
🇨🇿 Czechia
🇭🇷 Croatia
🇦🇹 Austria
🇧🇬 Bulgaria
🇪🇪 Estonia
To receive an exemption, the country’s request has to pass a QMV vote (Qualified Majority Voting) in the Council of the European Union.
Countries which are forced to take part in the Solidarity Pool will either have to take in the number of quota migrants assigned to them by the EU, pay EUR 21 000 for every quota migrant they refuse to receive or send significant resources to help the 4 countries under migratory pressure to handle the situation.
Two countries have refused to take part in the entire new migrant relocation system and its fines. Those two countries are:
🇭🇺 Hungary
🇸🇰 Slovakia

💔💔💔 HOW CAN ANYONE BE SO CRUEL?💔💔💔
Little Christy. Just look at this tiny, innocent baby. 💔
No more than 8 weeks old, this little puppy was abandoned late last night in Ashbourne, left alone to suffer, with nobody to care whether he lived or died in the freezing cold 💔💔💔💔
Thankfully, a kind hearted man spotted him before it was too late. He was absolutely red raw with mange, his little body covered in sore, irritated skin. He is skin and bone, full of worms and clearly has been suffering terribly.💔💔💔
Just imagine being so tiny, so helpless, and already knowing nothing but pain and neglect. 😢💔
What goes through someone's mind to abandon a baby like this? How can anyone walk away and leave an innocent little life to suffer?😡😡😡
This morning, we made sure Christy got straight to My Vet Ashbourne, where the wonderful team gave him the care and attention he desperately needed. His foster carer then collected him, and tonight, for the first time in who knows how long, this precious little soul is warm, safe and tucked up in a cosy bed.❤️
We've named him Christy, after the kind man who found him. ❤️
Christy has a long road ahead. His little body needs treatment, care and time to heal. But we promise him one thing: he will never be abandoned again. He will know kindness, he will know love, and he will finally know what it feels like to be wanted.
😭 FIVER FRIDAY, PLEASE, PLEASE HELP LITTLE CHRISTY.
We are asking you to donate whatever you can. Even €5 can make a difference. If you can manage a weekly or monthly fiver, even better.
Every single day, we are faced with another innocent animal suffering because of human cruelty and neglect. We cannot keep doing this without your support
💔❤️

Charity of the Day! Akidwa , or to give it its full name Akina Dada Wa Africa Company Limited By Guarantee
We try to be upbeat with these Tweets but sometimes you feel like putting your head in your arms and crying.
Its latest filed accounts show €765,716 of income in 2024 along with a note reference 4.1 but alas note 4.1 just repeats the same figure with no analysis. There is an analysis over several pages which suggests taxpayer income from six government schemes is €522,000, there is no analysis of non-govt funding.
That suggests that €244,000 comes from other sources. Akidwa says it spends €207,749 on "activities for raising funds"
It has 10 staff but didn't apparently record any PRSI in 2023. What's that about?
Whilst it hasn't published its 2025 accounts yet, it has provided a summary to the Charity Regulator which says its income for 2025 was €987,823 of which the taxpayer provided €811,000. This is a charity which had income of just €255,429 in 2021 of which €196,000 was from the taxpayer. Its taxpayer funding has QUADRUPLED in four years.
There is no analysis of salaries by band. The CEO is Salome Mbugua who we last saw out and about in 2024 protesting when the DPP didn't take any action against Gardai who shot George Nkencho in 2021.
What does the charity do?
"advancement of education and the relief of poverty by setting up a drop-in centre to relieve hardship for women immigrating, particularly from the Continent of Africa into Ireland by providing information, counselling (including therapeutic services for survivors of war, FGM, torture and other forms of disempowerment to women) and social friendly facilities."
