When we were kids we were encouraged to call the most tenuous family connections auntie and uncle, but when a real aunt & uncle came to visit we had to stay in because “the relations” were coming.

My dad with my kids in my parents’ front room 1992. No doubt he’d be strumming & singing “Frankie & Johnny” to them, as he did us 3 decades earlier.
Rarely hear this fine song nowadays. Probably because most of the population are now of the belief that if you hitch a ride you stand an even money chance of being murdered.
The origin of the saying “pulling your leg” comes from the legendary clown Joseph Grimaldi (1778-1837) whose circus act included encouraging audience members to pull his leg & smoke would come out of his ears. He would then feign anger & this gave rise to another everyday saying.
