ALT Foamy degeneration in alcoholic steatohepatitis (AH) is characterized by hepatocellular swelling with intracytoplasmic microvesicular fat and bile in the background of little inflammation. Additional findings include canalicular bile plugs and periportal ductular proliferation. Patients may present with worsening jaundice, elevated serum total bilirubin, and AST/ALT ratio > 1.5. ALT A sample obtained from the anus may exhibit glandular, transitional, or squamous mucosa. Transitional zone (TZ) mucosa resembles urothelium and is composed of immature squamoid cells. It may or may not include a superficial glandular, mucin-containing layer, with or without goblet cells. In the context of inflammation, TZ mucosa can appear cytologically concerning for high grade squamous intraepithelial lesion. A p16 immunostain typically demonstrates patchy staining (interpreted as negative) and can provide reassurance in such cases
