Alicia Keys’ mom worked up to three jobs to raise her alone. When Alicia wanted to quit piano lessons because money was tight, her mother wouldn’t let her. ❤️
Terria Joseph raised her daughter in New York’s Hell’s Kitchen. A friend gave them an old upright piano, and Terria made sure Alicia took lessons.
Years later, Alicia became emotional while honoring her mother on VH1’s Dear Mama in 2016.
“She found me a piano teacher and she found the money to pay for it,” Alicia said.
Then she performed “If I Ain’t Got You” for her mom, changing the words to thank the woman who had helped her keep playing.
