A ground rod is a metal rod—typically copper-clad steel—driven into the earth to establish a direct electrical connection between an electrical system (or lightning-protection system) and the earth. It provides a low-impedance (total opposition to current flow) path that helps stabilize system voltage relative to earth, dissipates high-energy events such as lightning strikes and voltage surges into the ground, and supports safe operation of the overall grounding electrode system.
A ground rod at a house is typically found driven into the earth so that its top is at or just below ground level, near the exterior wall close to the electrical service entrance (often near the meter or main panel location). It is connected by a grounding electrode conductor (usually a bare or insulated copper wire) that runs to the main electrical panel.
