"Dad, can you move your company to Japan?"
That was not on the bingo card as we wrapped Week 7 of our Family Gap Yearā¢ļø.
Everyone is really digging it here. We've found our groove (subways, workouts, almond butter and Whispering Angel). The entire family can even navigate Shinjuku Station without Google Maps.
And in 3 weeks we're hitting control-alt-delete and heading over to Seoul. It is a nice fantasy to consider living here (tl;dr, way too hard for a solopreneur) and we've got a lot of the world left to see. I suspect the question will come up again.
We also got hit with a gut punch of nostalgia this week. Our old house (rental) of 8 years came onto the market.
Someone sent us the listing. It was empty, the tacky fixtures had been upgraded and the floors restored.
"I miss our house," said our 9 year old. I didn't clarify that it was no longer "our house."
Plus, they re-listed it at a 25% rent increase, which is a painful reminder of the re-entry tax that awaits us next summer.
But it also validated the reason we're able to do this trip. We've been renters for 14 years (6 in Dumbo, 8 in Manhattan Beach). It's given us a ton of flexibility and financial liquidity to make bold life decisions.
There are many peers who have said they would try this but a massive mortgage just breaks the math.
Another side benefit of being renters for that long is that we accumulated way less stuff. Heck, we only had one car in LA.
And we never fell into the trap of "you can own your stuff, or your stuff can own you."
With kids aged 9 and 12 we were at that next phase of life where you dump all the baby shit. The milk-stained couches, the Ikea desks and that one dresser from when you were single.
We were at the phase when we could've done an upgrade - heck we were overdue for one - but kept putting it off because of the possibility of this trip.
There were moments where we were embarrassed to have certain people over, but had we done a 6-figure upgrade of all our stuff, we'd probably still be in LA.
Today, our stuff sits in 4 storage cubes and we'll do the upgrade when we get back. But as of today, the thought of buying more stuff just doesn't even register.
After all, the adventure bug does hit you pretty hard.

I simulated the next 31 years of my life
Trained an engine of myself on 15 years of handwritten journals, millions of texts and emails, and then modelled 1000s of permutations of my future

I remember asking assistant coach Mo Cheeks, whatās harder to do? Workout after practice or before?? I only asked cuz by time I would get to the gym, Russ was already done in the morning and I usually got mine in after practice. Mo like, ācoming in before practice is probably harderāā¦since then, itās been my routineā¦.a lot of people looked at the emotions on the court and thought Russ was loud, nah to me, he was quiet and methodical. He lead by example and once the lights were bright, he let everything out and experienced pure freedom. It was inspiring as his teammate and everywhere I went, I seen it inspire people from all walks of life, crazy thing is, he didnāt say much, he just showed up. For 18 years. This basketball life is sacred to us as professionals, what we put into that court means everything. Some of us wish we could go back and do things with a little more intent and some can just wipe their hands and be satisfied with the time spent. Who u gonna be? We know what zero was onā¦keep inspiring in the next phase of life champ. I donāt care what happens, canāt erase what it wasā¦The first YNs, finals run in our early 20s, all star games, seeing each other get injured and bounce back, the bus rides, plane rides, card games, jokes and arguments, the whole thing, memorable!! ā¦to the whole Westbrook family, Nina, the kids, mama Westbrook, big Russ, Ray, Donnell, everybody from luezinger high and ucla and many more that Iām forgettin, much love and Congratulations on a iconic career.
Is there a VPN that my VA can use to get around social media location detecting (not just accessing intl content)?

I can assure you that you donāt need to be in the arena. This is mostly a fictional place people working on laptops have created in their heads to avoid emotions

PODCASTS ARE DEAD, LONG LIVE THE PODCAST
I keep coming back to the idea that new forms of media will win on new definitions of quality. Airbnb didnāt compete with hotels by introducing better concierge services, it competed on new attributes like ālive like a localā or āspace to host guests.ā
Similarly, in podcasting, going head to head with Joe Rogan doesnāt make sense. Obviously aside from him being a singular personality, thereās a theoretical max to our discretionary media time and heās already satisfying all the old guard determinants of quality for a podcast.
*New* determinants of quality are still on the table, though. I spoke to the ever-observant @jaesmail about @OtherStuffPod, and how scenebuilding is among the emerging criteria for success in podcasting: gopayattention.com/p/game-taā¦
Every man looks in the mirror and sees a DJ
Every woman looks in the mirror and sees a travel influencer
As a creator, you gotta be mindful of your Attention : Quality ratio
Doesn't make sense to only focus on product quality
Doesn't make sense to chase attention if it massively outpaces your product
Everyone needs to try a camper van vacation
Itās the perfect mix of adventure, freedom, and control

I shipped my first web app to the public.
It's a like a CRM and a to-do list had a baby.
Just a simple way to stay in touch with your network using custom reminders.
It uses the GTD concept of an inbox and also tracks birthdays.
Suppose, nextjs, tailwind, Vercel
If anyone wants to beta test, I'd love it!
