My dad is 91 today and we just had such a good chat about childhood and parenting. Parenting basically stopped when WW2 broke out. After the war, he and his friends lived on the streets for years, barefoot, wearing shorts all through spring and summer. /1

Their parents were grateful for the wood, for heating and cooking, and never asked where it came from. Different times. I can't help thinking that this period, as a 10 year old having such responsiblity for supporting his family, and being recognised for it, was essential... /3

... in making him the wonderful man he became and still is. Such early sense of purpose and responsibility. Different times - just two generations ago, yet unimaginable for many children (but not all!) gowing up in the West these days.

I often harp on about the importance of automatic recall of number bonds in primary mathematics. Obviously lots of teaching related to number helps here (use of ten-frames, near doubles, bridging through 10, etc), but practise to build automaticity is crucial too. >>

My two cents: Most of the solution to English would involve ensuring almost every pupil becomes a fluent reader through instruction and intervention that prioritises actual time spent reading to develop word recognition automaticity. >>
