Mia Goth’s haunting final smile in PEARL (2022) was a last-minute idea from Ti West, not part of the script. He asked her to hold the expression for as long as possible. She held it for three minutes, and they got it in one take.

Last Night in Soho’ turns 5 today. To celebrate this mini-milestone, here’s some concept art for Marcus Rowland’s amazing production design on the movie. This art was done by a talented human, Mr Paul Threadgold.
You can see how we turned Goodge Place back to the ’60s, how we created the period Café de Paris on a soundstage, the fictitious Rialto club, an unnamed basement clip joint, and how we sent stretches of Greek, Frith and Bateman Streets in real Soho back in time.
It’s been so lovely to read some of your comments on ‘Last Night in Soho’ this week. I remain very proud of the movie, both for the realization of some ambitious worlds and for the wonderful time I spent with this cast and crew.
Those of you who saw it on the big screen when it was first released, I applaud you, especially with in the middle of an Omicron spike. But I do not begrudge anyone who came to it later, either. New viewers are always welcome. You can’t be late to a movie.
Happy 5th, ‘Last Night in Soho’. See you in the Toucan for a pint of Numbers. @lastnightinsoho

Here are some behind-the-scenes photos from LAST NIGHT IN SOHO to celebrate its 5th anniversary this week. All stills by the great Parisa Taghizadeh.
Watching the film again on Sunday night was a powerful trip down memory lane in a number of ways. It made me think of the incredible cast and crew: we worked so hard, but had a lot of fun too. It also made me think of a different London—not just the London of the 1960s, but a pre-Covid capital, as we made the film just before (and partly during) the pandemic.
And of course, it made me think of two actors who are no longer with us: Dame Diana Rigg and Terence Stamp. Both legends, and both people I feel honoured to have known and have worked with.

'Last Night In Soho' turns 5 this week. I'll post some behind the scenes photos in the next few days. But enjoy this breakdown of the 'Cafe De Paris' dance sequence with Anya Taylor Joy, Thomasin McKenzie and Matt Smith, choreographed by the great Jennifer White.
Too many amazing people worked on this film with me, and there are sequences (like this) that I'm insanely proud of. Shoutouts to Marcus Rowland for this incredible set, the genius DOP Chung-Hoon Chung, our amazing VFX supervisor Tom Proctor and, in this scene especially, the magnificent camera operator Chris Bain. Enjoy and more soon!

DRIVE (2011) is one of those rare films where every creative decision feels right. Ryan Gosling, Nicolas Winding Refn, the synth-heavy soundtrack, the deliberate pacing and those sudden bursts of violence all come together into something damn near perfect.

Remember when BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES injected a little AKIRA DNA into Clayface’s transformation and made it gloriously disturbing? Ron Perlman’s voice work made the whole thing even better, giving the shape-shifting horror a genuinely tragic edge.

DUNE (2021) was released 5 years ago today.
Denis Villeneuve insisted on splitting Frank Herbert’s dense novel into two films rather than cramming the story into one. The gamble paid off when the sequel became a box-office phenomenon.

SHAUN OF THE DEAD (2004) uses the exact same walk before and after the zombie outbreak, turning an ordinary morning routine into a brilliant visual joke. The attention to detail is unreal.

Releasing November 25 on Prime Video.
“Andor” creator Tony Gilroy says it’s “tragic” that the Paramount-Warner Bros. merger is threatening to “destroy the architecture” of Hollywood “in the name of venture capital”:
“People say the movie business is in trouble You go around, you stand anywhere you want, what do people talk about? Did you see this? Did you see that? What episode are you on? The business is solid, and to destroy the architecture that made it so in the name of venture capital, it’s tragic.”
Serving as the centerpiece film at #NYFF, “Behemoth!” stars Pedro Pascal as a gifted cellist. While introducing his new film, Gilroy praised the festival’s lineup as a bright spot amid an increasingly turbulent Hollywood landscape.
“When so many things go to sh*t in Hollywood, this is like a thank you,” Gilroy told the crowd. “Thank you for letting us bring our soufflé to your groovy party.”

Happy 59th Birthday to Denis Villeneuve! 🎂
Here’s 23-year-old Villeneuve in his room with BLADE RUNNER and DUNE soundtracks. He was so obsessed with the idea of adapting Dune that he and his childhood friend storyboarded their own version of the movie.
