My paper, "The Cross-Sectional Implications of the Social Discount Rate", is forthcoming in Econometrica! The basic idea of the paper in 5 tweets, and then some acknowledgements 1/9
Should policymakers discount the future less than the market? @MayaREden shows that any Paretian social welfare function that has this property must also favor more transfers from older people to younger ones @GPIOxford econometricsociety.org/publi…

UZH PhD student Ana Brás-Monteiro is on the market. Consider hiring Ana! Can a teacher affect their students’ mental health? In my job market paper, I establish that teachers contribute to student well-being in ways that test scores miss, with lasting impacts on mental health care utilization and depression diagnoses measured years later. UZH PhD student Nelson Sunuwar (@nelson_snwr) is on the market. Consider hiring Nelson! I study how firms set wages, combining tools from industrial organization with natural experiments and large administrative datasets. My job market paper shows that firms only partially internalize shifts in labor market competition, affecting how we evaluate antitrust and labor policy alike. UZH PhD student Frederik Bennhoff is on the market. Consider hiring Frederik! Capital gains are central to the income of the richest yet remain untaxed until assets are sold. I show that optimal trading in diversified portfolios can halve the effective tax rate relative to the statutory rate, undermining tax progressivity while increasing investors’ after-tax returns. UZH PhD student Sara Rabino is on the market. Consider hiring Sara! How do young people perceive the social impact of different careers before choosing one? In a survey experiment with US college students, I show they underestimate the sense of contribution some fields of study provide far more than others, consistent with stereotyping. Correcting these beliefs shifts the advice they give peers and, for women, their own academic choices. Link in reply 👇 #EconJobMarket #EconTwitter

UZH PhD student Stine Helmke (@stinehelmke) is on the market. Consider hiring Stine! Individuals spend considerable resources on visible signals like luxury attire, especially in low-income settings. My job market paper shows that signaling does not always pay off. In two experiments in urban Tanzania, I find that luxury attire helps in some domains but hurts in others, yet individuals invest in signaling even where it backfires. UZH PhD student Theodor Friederiszick (@theodor_f) is on the market. Consider hiring Theodor! I work at the intersection of industrial organization and labor economics, studying how market power shapes worker outcomes. In my job market paper, we develop a new method to identify the workers most exposed to harm following a closure or merger. Link in reply 👇 #EconJobMarket #EconTwitter

UZH PhD student Marta Mojoli is on the market. Consider hiring Marta! Can a persuader who controls what you see exploit how you interpret it? It depends on the causal model shaping your interpretation: whether what you see is evidence of what you want to learn or a cause of it. If evidence, the model can limit persuasion; if a cause, it can be used against you. Link in reply 👇 #EconJobMarket #EconTwitter

UZH PhD student Carole Marullaz (@CaroleMarullaz) is on the market. Consider hiring Carole! Firms do not fully consider emissions when deciding whether to make or buy their inputs, and from whom. My job market paper quantifies how much energy could be saved by reallocating production across the supply chain if they did. In Italian manufacturing, this accounts for a fifth of the gains from carbon pricing. Link in reply 👇 #EconJobMarket #EconTwitter

1/ I believe this paper by Robson and Samuelson (2011) is excellent, and also very important for how we think about welfare economics. It offers a fascinating explanation for why what we want and what makes us happy can systematically differ. A thread 🧵 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…

In the 1800s, the risk of childbirth was the wife’s. The money, by law, was her husband’s. As US states gave wives control of their property and wages, couples had fewer children: most of all where childbirth was deadliest. That’s ~18% of the 1850–1920 fertility decline. As late as 1900, about 1 in 125 births killed the mother, so wives had reason to want fewer children than their husbands did. Economic rights strengthened their hand. Two designs: neighboring counties across state lines (the graph), and, since the laws weren’t retroactive, couples in the same county married before vs. after the reform. Both give similar answers.

Some people have raised the point that, as ethics is unsettled, we should be open-minded about shrimp/insect welfare. I think we should also be open-minded to the possibility that utilitarian ethics and its neighbors are fundamentally wrong or incomplete.

It's good to consider questions like shrimp or insect welfare even if you disagree with the conclusions, given that many claims we take for granted today were once considered equally farcical and there is no reason to think ethics is solved is any meaningful sense.

Happy to see this paper coming out at @ecmaEditors, joint with my brilliant co-authors Mark Aguiar and @ben_moll! Here's a thread by Ben from when we posted the first version, explaining the gist of it: xitter.gq/ben_moll/status/180667…
When Jeff Bezos's Amazon stock doubles, should his tax bill? No, say Mark Aguiar, @ben_moll and @Florian_Scheuer: optimal taxes target realized net trades plus cash flows—not wealth or unrealized gains—while avoiding lock-in, whatever moves asset prices. econometricsociety.org/publi…

Today I begin my term as coordinating editor of Economics & Philosophy. Most submissions are from philosophers, but X has demonstrated that economists also have plenty to say (e.g., “capitalism”). I hope to see more submissions from you!
