The National Tsunami Warning Center has issued a Tsunami Watch for the entire California coast, including Southern California in effect until further notice, following a confirmed tsunami-generating 8.7 earthquake that struck the north Pacific off of Russia at 4:24 PM today, July 29.
A Tsunami Watch means a tsunami might happen. It’s issued early, after an earthquake or event that could cause a tsunami, but before it's confirmed. Stay alert and be ready to move quickly to higher ground.
Residents in coastal areas under a tsunami watch are urged to stay alert for additional updates and be aware of estimated tsunami start times, estimated for Los Angeles Harbor tonight, July 30 at 1:05 AM.
City staff is coordinating with the LA County Office of Emergency Management, is monitoring the situation, and will post additional alerts as needed.

The HARD CLOSURE of Pacific Coast Highway between Chautauqua Boulevard and Carbon Beach Terrace will remain until further notice due to heavy flooding and mudslides.

Caltrans installed k-rails and sandbags along PCH to hold any mudflow to protect homes in front of steep slopes. Crews will also be patrolling PCH with plow-mounted trucks 24 hours during the storm to assist in debris removal.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department are utilizing drones to keep a watchful eye on burn scar areas during the current rainstorm.
@LASDHQ has created a Looter Suppression Team which combines patrol deputies, Aero Bureau, and drones to conduct checks on evacuated residences that could be targeted by looters.

A slide occurred overnight on PCH, just north of Big Rock Dr. Caltrans crews removed about 10 truckloads of debris. There is more on the shoulder drying out before removal. Our Geotechnical team will survey the closure area today to decide if & when to reopen. #PCH
