We have the opportunity to end the megafire crisis in the next 10 years, but it will not happen without a bold approach. We’re the first org focused solely on enacting policies to solve this crisis.

On today’s show: What’s Passed, What’s Pending, What’s Been Defeated? A Current Look At Wildfire Legislation
If anyone knows how to navigate the political soup to pass wildfire legislation, it’s Matt Weiner, CEO and Founder of Megafire Action.
Megafire Action has worked on hazard pay for prescribed burns, the Fix Our Forests Act, and much of the wildfire legislation that recently passed in California. This includes home hardening grants, reducing litigation for prescribed burns, grants for communities in the wildland urban interface, and even a dedicated CAL FIRE unit to test and rapidly deploy emerging wildfire technology.
Before founding Megafire Action in 2022, Matt was the Executive Director of the CA Democratic Congressional Delegation (House of Representatives), Chief of Staff to State Senator Henry Stern (CA), and held various roles with the House Energy and Commerce Committee and the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.
They are now focused on federal wildfire legislation, with many wondering what that will look like in the coming months. A great conversation.

So far this year, 66,000 wildfires have burned more than 9 million acres across America — thousands of those acres in San Diego alone. The time to act is now; My Fix Our Forests Act has support from Republicans and Democrats, both in the House and Senate, and it’s time we pass it into law. (1/2)

Catastrophic wildfires should not be the new normal.
Chairman @RepWesterman’s #FixOurForests Act promotes active forest management to restore forest health, reduce hazardous fuels and help prevent catastrophic wildfires before they start.

Wildfires are a significant and growing national security risk. Congress has a generational opportunity to reform the way we plan, permit and execute wildfire resilience projects by passing the Fix Our Forests Act this year.
Moving through regular order, FOFA has gotten stronger and more bipartisan at every step of the process. It’s got the votes. It needs to move on NDAA this year.

Wildfire technology is advancing quickly, but getting the best tools into the hands of firefighters can still take far too long. I appreciated speaking at the Wildfire Technology Summit to discuss how the Fix Our Forests Act can modernize that process, improve wildfire intelligence and coordination, and make sure firefighters have the technology they need to protect themselves and our communities.
America's wildfire crisis is a growing threat to military readiness. Our founder and CEO @MegafireMatt explains in @starsandstripes why the #FixOurForests Act should be included as an amendment to the #NDAA: stripes.com/theaters/us/2026…

.@CAgovernor just cemented his legacy of leadership on wildfire by signing the biggest state mitigation package in US history, including @MegafireAction’s full CA agenda.
@BenAllenCA’s SB 894 will finally put CA on a path to scaling wildfire safe homes.
@HenrySternCA’s SB 1079 creates the first ever Fire Innovation Unit at @CAL_FIRE, creating a pathway to scale new tech to address the Megafire crisis.
And a full package of bills to cut red tape, get good fire on the ground, and make our communities safer.
BREAKING: @CAGovernor just signed all three Megafire Action-sponsored bills in the Joint Megafire Prevention Package, delivering a historic win for wildfire prevention in California.
These new laws will make resilience more affordable, strengthen local capacity and get needed wildfire technology into the field.
🏠 SB 894, sponsored by @BenAllenCA makes it easier for Californians to afford the upgrades that can protect their homes from wildfire.
As new wildfire safety requirements like Zone 0 take effect, California now has a framework to help homeowners finance the upgrades that can reduce their risk & protect their homes.
🔥 SB 1079, championed by @HenrySternCA creates a dedicated Fire Innovation Unit within CAL FIRE to test, evaluate and deploy promising wildfire technology.
This new unit will help get firetech out of the lab and into the hands of firefighters and communities faster.
🚒 SB 973, led by @SenJoshBecker strengthens wildfire preparedness at the local level by expanding the County Coordinator Program statewide.
That means more communities will have dedicated capacity to coordinate wildfire prevention and resilience work before disaster strikes.
One year after launching our California practice, all three of our sponsored bills are now law.
This is what’s possible when lawmakers like @BenAllenCA, @SenJoshBecker, and @HenrySternCA work alongside advocates, community leaders, and partners across California to advance practical solutions.

The solutions are there. Now we need action.

CA has a chance to lead the nation if @GavinNewsom signs @HenrySternCA’s SB 1079 this week.
Wildfires have devastated communities across our state. That’s why I’m leading the effort in the U.S. Senate to strengthen wildfire prevention, improve preparedness, and help ensure our communities have the resources they need when fires hit.
