Oh & finally: I think I see what you're trying to do with the USSR antisemitism but, to me, it weakens your argument bc it lacks exculpatory effect & gives the impression of grasping at straws. I would've advised you to at least move it below your more substantive arguments.

I'm curious to know: Why do you think Israel still hasn't allowed any foreign journalists to enter Gaza and report freely, and do you think there may be some connection to the ongoing ICJ case?
Replying to @Megankstack @ProfDBernstein
.. circling back to rhetoric, we're still hearing Israeli officials discuss the goal of making life unbearable for Palestinians to encourage voluntary migration, which seems to me to have some evidentiary bearing on the overall intent of destruction of Gaza.

... or explain this was a territory where refugees from Israel proper were prevented by force from returning on the basis of their religious identity, ie, that this killing targeted a particular group amid ongoing ethnic cleansing of that same group. Finally...

OK. I think you've vastly (& perhaps disingenuously) understated the annihilation rhetoric from Israeli military/political leaders & ignored the implications for establishing intent. Nor do you discuss Gaza as a territory over which Israel asserted control pre-10/7

But you know sovereignty doesn’t depend on quality of governance/individual rights within a country, which change over time without stripping a people’s right to statehood. The Palestinians exist & are entitled to full human rights. 1 state, 2 states, federalism?

Israel has been in the news for obvious reasons & Americans are uniquely implicated in whatever Israel does. But I write unfavorably about all kinds of governments, especially when it comes to war crimes, not least my own. But you have every right to your opinions.

Yes & I’m sure you’re aware, settlement expansion 🚀 post-Oslo.
Fundamentally it shouldn’t be for another country (US/Israel) to “give” guns & police. Palestinians are a people, entitled to sovereignty or full rights in a Jewish/Arab state. You’re a lawyer, what else is there?

Like, I know my answers, but maybe they will seem trite to this teacher and maybe that will somehow handicap my kid so I’m going to seek the most generically appealing response.
I get it! But I say that as someone who avoids AI like the plague.

I’m trying to unpack how I both firmly agree with you and disagree with you at the same time.
I think there’s something about trying to game out how the teacher will rate your answers— thinking this is somehow high stakes — that makes me a little sympathetic as a parent.

Maybe, but the legal case for genocide in Gaza, based on the language of the 1948 convention (not the emotive response to the word or connotation tied to the Nazi Holocaust), is strong. The fact that Jews were victims themselves of appalling genocide doesn’t come into it, legally

My position is that it’s stupid to claim people are sovereign if they don’t have a right to defend themselves, create a military, control their borders and airspace.

You don’t need tweets, you can read my book on the Middle East or other published writings. I was blistering, ie, on Saudi Arabia’s gender apartheid, by far the most extreme in the region at the time (yes much worse than Iran which was also bad). No time for theocracies here.

Please don’t be infantile. I don’t “hate” any ideas, I’m actually very fond of ideas even when I don’t agree. But I think there is a lot of conveniently unexplored terrain about the meaning of Palestinian sovereignty and this comes into sharpest focus when we talk about defense.

1st, I’m already read up. 2nd, I covered Moscow for years & you can’t tell me anything new about gross Soviet/Russian antisemitism but, 3rd, you’re a legal scholar so you’d agree that having been accused of a crime previously doesn’t mean the crime wasn’t subsequently committed?
To take 1 of countless examples, impoverished Irish people (who’d suffered famine, penal laws, land expropriation under British rule) fled to the US and wound up getting recruited off the docks to fight in the Indian wars. Yes this is 🤯 but it’s also human history.
“You take the victim and make the victim the perpetrator.” I hear versions of this argument a lot but it doesn’t make any sense. No category of person is fixed through history as one or the other. Many (most?) have taken a turn as both victim and perpetrator depending on context.
“To accuse the Jewish people of genocide is wild.”
Broadway icon and Nobody Wants This star Tovah Feldshuh gets real with Jonathan Harounoff on UNSCRIPTED, on acting, marriage, the global rise of antisemitism, and what she says about the genocide accusations against Israel.

This is actually a condescending view of working-class people. I grew up in a working-class immigrant family and we ate at Red Lobster and The Cheesecake Factory for "fancy nights out." But even we understood that the White House should not look like the inside of a Red Lobster. Working-class people are not culturally illiterate just because their experiences are shaped by their limited means.
