I know @HaleyforMI way better than most people on X. She and I came into Congress together in 2018. She was co-Prez of our freshman class. She was incredibly kind to me when my late partner died; she organized a big group of our class to come to the House floor to support me when I spoke about his suicide. We were roommates in 2023, after my wonderful first roomie lost her election; both my adult kids know Haley well and are on a texting basis with her. We’ve socialized and we have good friends in common. While she and I differ on one impt issue, specifically Israel and AIPAC support, I’ve never publicly challenged her on those things, because I felt that her good points outweighed the issues I disagreed with her on. Today, that changes. 👇
Haley’s endorsement of Rogers in the MI senate race is appalling. Not because he’s a Republican, but because what he stands for is what she, and I, and our caucus has fought so hard against. Rogers is a 100% anti-choice politician. He is a Trump loyalist. He’s shown his Islamophobia in his many remarks against @AbdulElSayed, and with this endorsement, Haley has shown that she agrees with his positions. I’m shocked by Haley’s endorsement. I’m terribly sad and disappointed. I’m furious and will be more so if we lose the MI senate race. So many people in the Democratic Party have shown so much support to Haley over the years, and she has betrayed them all. If this is because of her new relationship (about which many of us were so happy for her after she lost the primary), all I can say is that any woman who abandons her friends when a new guy comes along is no friend at all. The fallout for Haley won’t just be in Dem politics; she will be a pariah among her friends in the Democratic caucus in Congress. Only she will be able to decide whether it was worth it.

Reparations were actually paid, not to the enslaved, but to the former slave owners.
When Britain abolished slavery in 1833, it didn't compensate the enslaved. Instead, it spent £20M, a massive 40% of its national budget, to pay reparations exclusively to slave owners.
The government took out such a massive loan to fund this bailout that UK taxpayers didn't finish paying it off until 2015.
Slavery was an evil in which people from every continent and region participated. We should be honest about the whole history, not select the parts that are politically convenient today, especially given Britain's leading role in ending the transatlantic slave trade.
If Caribbean countries are asking Britain for a formal apology for Britain’s role in the transatlantic slave trade, will they also be asking the same of the descendants of African kingdoms, rulers and merchants who captured, sold and profited from the trade?
On demands for reparations, whether through cash or debt relief, we have been down this track before. Twenty-five years ago, Jubilee 2000, Drop the Debt and Make Poverty History argued that cancelling the debts of poorer countries would give them a fresh start. More than $100 billion of debt was eventually written off, but many of those countries have since built up even bigger debts. Labour are already spending too much on Britain's welfare state, now is not the time for Andy Burnham to be providing global welfare.
There is no reason British taxpayers today should be held financially responsible for things that happened generations before any of us were born. And I have even less patience for political elites in commonwealth countries who don’t know how to make their own citizens prosperous now looking for another opportunity to blame Britain.
As Prime Minister, Andy Burnham should be Britain’s greatest defender. Instead, he is writing articles saying we need to confront our history (as if we haven't done enough of that) and considering another formal historical apology. Tony Blair already expressed Britain’s deep sorrow and regret for our role in the slave trade nearly twenty years ago. There is no need to do so again.
This is all another navel-gazing distraction. The Commonwealth should be looking forward, not endlessly backwards. That means economic partnerships to make us all richer and deeper military and security cooperation against common threats. If every Commonwealth summit becomes an exercise in presenting Britain with demands for cash then we need to start asking if it is worth the effort.

So let me get this straight - we need to repeatedly condemn Hasan Piker and his entire bloodline, or else support a racist, anti-Black, misogynistic, Islamophobic, homophobic, transphobic, election denying MAGA Republican? How does that make sense?
A White candidate from Detroit’s historically segregated suburbs attempting to use Black voters as cover. It looks small.
Replying to @samueljrob
Stevens says she’s for investing in Black owned businesses. “And that’s the policy that Mike’s going to take on,” Stevens says.

Maybe more time spent scrutinizing Haley Stevens and less time demanding Abdul El Sayed denounce @hasanthehun might have helped avoid this scenario.
Just a thought.
Standing with Miker Rogers is a betrayal of everything Haley Stevens has fought for her entire career. It's also a betrayal of all of her supporters that believed in her. I hope @AbdulElSayed has a strong victory on Tuesday and that all Democrats and like-minded independents support vote for him.

Haley Stevens saw Obama endorse and then rally for El-Sayed and said “I’m gonna tell black Michiganders they should vote for Mike Rogers” lmfao

על כן החלטתי שסיעת ״ביחד״ תמליץ לנשיא להטיל את מלאכת הרכבת הממשלה על גדי איזנקוט.
בהצלחה גדי!
Asked one major Dem donor this afternoon if there was any real concern Haley Stevens moves votes:
"No," the donor said. "She couldn't move votes for herself."

This move by Stevens highlights the fact that ⚪️ politicians, and in most cases, ⚪️ people, do not know or deal with, actual ⚫️ folks in real life. No ⚫️ staffers, pollsters, clothes, nothing, including Democrats. Because a real ⚫️ person would’ve told her this was not gonna work

This is a must-read, from a man who defected from the Communist bloc to the USA 40 years ago. "What worries me the most is not Trump himself or those who do his bidding, but rather the willingness of so many ordinary citizens to look away."

This is why you don’t play with matches, kids.
Neera Tanden spent the entire campaign playing with fire because she couldn’t get over Haley Stevens losing to Abdul. Now Haley endorsed Mike Rogers.

Good time to remember MLK’s words about the white moderate, I think.
“I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro’s great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White citizens’ “Councilor” or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate […].”

President Obama is all in to elect Abdul El-Sayed to the U.S. Senate.
"This country belongs to all of us. Not just the wealthy or well-connected—everyone. That idea is under attack, and Michigan is where we fight back.
That's why I'm asking YOU to support Abdul El-Sayed for U.S. Senate."
