Josip Broz Tito built Yugoslavia's socialist economy on a supposedly clever premise: worker self-management. Factories would be run by elected workers' councils rather than central planners in Belgrade. Western intellectuals practically wept with admiration. Here, finally, was socialism with a human face. But the math never worked. Worker-managed firms systematically chose higher wages over capital reinvestment, because workers capturing today's income had no personal stake in machinery that would outlast their tenure. The incentive to maintain and expand productive capital simply vanished. Yugoslav firms borrowed heavily from state banks to cover the gap, and those banks lent freely because the political cost of bankruptcy was too high for any official to absorb. Inflation ran at 30% annually through most of the 1980s, eventually hitting 2,665% in 1989. You didn't need to theorize about the collapse; you could read it on the price tags. Tito papered over the structural rot with Western loans. Yugoslavia accumulated $20 billion in foreign debt by his death in 1980. That borrowing bought political legitimacy, but not productive capacity. When global interest rates spiked under Volcker's Fed, the debt service alone crushed the economy. The decentralization of Tito's model also contained a fatal political logic. Each of Yugoslavia's six republics developed its own economic fiefdom, protecting regional industries from competition with other regions. Six separate planning bureaucracies fought over the same shrinking pie. Slovenia and Croatia, the most productive republics, grew resentful of transfers flowing south and west. Property rights remained collectivized throughout. No worker actually owned his share of the firm, which meant he couldn't sell it, pledge it, or use it to signal genuine economic preferences. Prices carried noise instead of information. Capital flowed toward political favor rather than toward producers with better ideas. Socialism doesn't work, whether it's centralized or decentralized.

Gadi Eisenkot reverses course and says he will break the election deadlock imposed by Jewish Israeli partiesโ€™ boycott of Israeli Arab parties. He will form government with the backing of the Arab Joint List. This would mark the end of Netanyahu as PM.

A lot of people seem shocked by China's heavy-handed retaliatory actions on Mbappรฉ. They assumed once the Chinese understood the context - that the Mao meme was self-deprecating, that the "Chinese dictator" line was not malicious - the whole thing would get walked back as a giant misunderstanding. Let me explain why this kind of thinking is wrong, and why they were never going to backpedal. What happened to Mbappรฉ is the modern version of that famous 1937 Stalin photo with Nikolai Yezhov. After Yezhov fell out of favor, the photo got retouched so comprehensively that the space where he had once stood was filled in with canal water and railing. It was as if he was never there. It's the same playbook here - once the system decided someone or something or some event is a problem, the record gets airbrushed until the problem no longer exists. Dan Wang, in his excellent book Breakneck, describes China as an engineering state run by technocrats who excel at construction and large-scale execution. He contrasts this with Americaโ€™s lawyerly society that is process-heavy, rights-oriented, and tends to get stymied by obstruction. The same mindset that builds high-speed rail, factories, and manufacturing process knowledge also extends into social engineering that treats society, narratives, and public sentiment as systems to optimize. Wangโ€™s examples include the One Child Policy and zero-COVID, both of which locked in once launched because the system prioritizes outcomes and consistency over flexible correction. You'll notice that the system tends to lurch to the extremes. These numbers - One Child, Zero Covid - are seriously autistic in its drive and focus to achieve overtly neat outcomes that are humanly impossible. The targets are unrealistic and sound like engineering specs, because leaders that are literal-minded end up seeing human activity as flows that can be turned on or off with valves. Mao remains the founding leader in official historiography; jokes or โ€œdictatorโ€ labels challenge Party legitimacy and the narrative of national rejuvenation. Back in 2018, the Law on the Protection of Heroes and Martyrs came into effect which criminalizes the slander of those officially designated as heroes and martyrs. So once the reaction to Mbappรฉ's clip ignited (Weibo outrage, coordinated brand statements), however erroneous it was, however much of a misunderstsanding it was, the engineering state executed a full response that left no room for nuance or de-escalation: > Chinese state media canceled La Liga broadcasts indefinitely > Companies dropped him > His face was scrubbed from all ads in China > His products were removed from shelves > Mbappรฉ has been removed from Chinese versions of major football video games > Platforms muted or restricted accounts and promotional material that mentions him. While a lawyerly society such as ours might weigh context, free speech, the light tone, or other extenuating circumstances, the engineering state doesn't do that. It cannot self-correct mid-course. It is built to solve problems and the problem here is to protect heroes and martyrs, restore face, and deter future incidents. Partial retreat would leave the โ€œproblemโ€ half-solved and look like incomplete execution. This is why the CCP proactively shapes historical memory and public sentiment. Maoโ€™s status is non-negotiable. Tiananmen has to stay scrubbed from collective memory at all costs. Admitting the reaction was excessive or that the joke was harmless would concede ground on a foundational myth and imply the engineered social order is contestable. The funniest part is that the lengths they went to protect the narrative boundary meant they couldnโ€™t even accurately report on what Mbappรฉ said. โ€œChinese dictatorโ€ would itself be slandering a hero. So the Chinese people were told he had insulted China, with vague references to โ€œinappropriate remarks.โ€ Behind the Great Firewall, people are outraged and have purged Mbappรฉ from everyday life while having no idea exactly why. It's basically like The Borg from Star Trek, operating as a hive-mind. Not to mention, "face" (้ขๅญ) matters a lot in Chinese culture and the manic devotion to "saving face" makes about-turns almost impossible. This is why Mbappรฉโ€™s, Javier Tebasโ€™s, and Real Madridโ€™s apologies have zero impact. The engineering state acknowledged the apology (while still not being able to tell the Chinese people what it was for), but it will not meaningfully restore the contracts and licensing deals. The system is driven toward decisive, all-or-nothing execution on any problem it decides is important and to the Chinese, Mao is VERY important. Reversing course would be a public admission that the original solution was flawed. In a system that presents its policies as scientifically rational and historically correct, thatโ€™s moral and even civilizational suicide. That said, the system can be reversed. The one-child policy was eventually relaxed in 2015 and then ended. Zero-COVID was abandoned very abruptly in late 2022 after widespread protests (very rare in China), signaling that the costs of maintaining it was too high. What will likely happen here is what happened after the Chinese canceled the NBA and Houston Rockets over Daryl Morey's innocuous tweet supporting the Hong Kong pro-democracy movement in 2019. There will be no formal public reversal. Instead what you will see is a gradual and low-key restoration of the status quo. Daryl Morey left the Houston Rockets in 2020 and then by 2022, fully two and a half years later, Chinese state TV (CCTV) fully resumed regular NBA broadcasts. It was all very discreet. The lesson here is: never apologize. It's pointless. You only compromise your own integrity. The over-the-top reaction is a feature of the Chinese system, not a bug. It's not just because of different values, it's also because you're trying to do business with a culture that has implemented a specific institutional and cognitive style that treats society as yet another engineering problem to solve. There is no mechanism to self-correct so you just have to wait it out.

That the Communist hammer and sickle isnโ€™t commonly regarded as evil and offensive as the Nazi swastika is a failure of education.
โ€œDear Italian students, who today take to the streets carrying flags with the hammer and sickle and wearing T-shirts emblazoned with โ€˜CCCPโ€™,โ€ began an open letter in Italian by Lithuanian expat Neringa Budryt. โ€œI would like to ask you a question: do you truly know what the symbols you carry represent? And do you know what would have happened to many of you had you openly demonstrated in countries living under the oppression of communist regimes? Let me tell you something. It is easy to display a red flag when, for you, communism is merely an abstract idea of equality, social justice, and rebellion against the system. It is easy to wear a T-shirt with "CCCP" on it when you have never experienced the reality of a communist regime. We come from that part of Europe where communism was not a T-shirt, a symbol of rebellion, or a romanticized notion of equality. It was the system in which we livedโ€”a system we never chose. We know the history of Soviet repression, Stalinist purges, the Gulags, and mass deportations. Above all, we know the word "Siberia"โ€”a place to which thousands of innocent people were forcibly deported, simply for thinking differently. In Siberiaโ€”amidst freezing cold, starvation, and forced laborโ€”many lost their lives; those who survived carried the scars of that experience forever. Entire families were torn apart, and generations were denied the chance to live freely in their own homeland. In the countries of the Soviet bloc, censorship, political police, surveillance, and the suppression of dissent drastically curtailed individual freedoms. We grew up in a system where state control permeated even our daily lives. At school, we were required to wear the red necktie of the "Pioneers." We were monitored; they tracked where we went and even whether we attended church. Even faithโ€”a choice that should belong to an individualโ€™s own conscienceโ€”could become a cause for suspicion. We used to celebrate Christmas with our windows blacked out, to ensure no one would see us and report us. Because it was forbiddenโ€”just like so many other things: jeans, rock music, and all the symbols of a Western lifestyle. My mother returned from a Soviet labor camp. And do you know what happened to her? She was barred from continuing her education because she had been labeled an enemy of communism. Under a communist regime, you could not protest. You risked arrest, imprisonment, interrogation, persecutionโ€”and, in certain historical contexts, even death. In the Soviet Union and other communist regimes, political dissent could cost you your freedom and your life. Demonstrations independent of the authorities were not a guaranteed right; they were often suppressed by force. That is why it strikes me to see young Italians proudly displaying the hammer and sickleโ€”symbols associated with regimes that persecuted and imprisoned millions of people. Today, you are free to take to the streets, shout against the government, criticize institutions, and wave your flags precisely because you live in a democracy that grants you these freedoms. Under an authoritarian regime of that kind, protesting against those in power could have landed you in prison. This is not about denying the existence of social injustices, inequalities, or the right to fight for a better world. You are free to take to the streets to demand a more just societyโ€”but you should not idealize a system that denied so many people the very things you are free to exercise today: the right to choose, to believe, to speak, and to dissent. Before wearing a T-shirt with "CCCP" on it, listen to those who experienced that world. Talk to the deportees and their descendants; read the accounts of those who endured the gulags and forced exile to Siberia. Learn what it meant to be stripped of your freedom, your home, your loved onesโ€”and even any prospect of a normal lifeโ€”simply because of your background or your beliefs. We all feel in our guts that this is happening online. Yet our politicians seem feeble and powerless, unable to assert sovereignty in our online spaces as they do offline. There is a real need for a paradigm shift. We need to recognise social media as a form of public square which cannot be left to the self interesed whims of for-profit foreign companies to control and govern. Democratic governments need to take a more robust role in the regulation of online spaces, and platforms need to be legally liable for the content posted on them. For Australia, the senseless attack on @helenhainesindi makes this more urgent than ever. The central question is will our politicians and governments have the courage to do more than just tinker?
NEW: Italyโ€™s Defence Minister Guido Crosetto said the recent riots in Milan and other parts of Italy were the result of what he called a hybrid war being waged against Western countries through unconventional tools such as TikTok, social media and YouTube. Crosetto said that three in ten young people had participated in the demonstrations and six in ten supported them, arguing that young people had been subjected to a counter-education outside their families and schools that shaped their values, ambitions and worldview in ways that conflict with democratic rules.

This has been talked about for decades. But weโ€™re getting on with it. This tunnel is one of four being built through T2D to deliver a non-stop South Road. Itโ€™s a massive undertaking. And itโ€™s happening right now.

It is sickening that the USA is now lifting sanctions on Russian fuel, and transparently ridiculous to blame Ukraine for the spike in prices that obviously began with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Putin is murdering innocent Ukrainian civilians every day. The Ukrainians are fighting for their lives. And yet the White House is apparently determined to force American drivers to bankroll Putinโ€™s slaughter. It wonโ€™t work and I doubt it will make much difference to the price of fuel. If we want Russian oil and gas back on the world market then letโ€™s end this war - with a free, sovereign and independent Ukraine.

Read this statement by GWB after the execution of Timothy McVeigh and just wanted to cry. Within my lifetime, this level of moral seriousness was the bare minimum we expected from officeholders.
โ€œThis morning, the United States of America carried out the severest sentence for the gravest of crimes. The victims of the Oklahoma City bombing have been given not vengeance, but justice. And one young man met the fate he chose for himself six years ago. For the survivors of the crime and for the families of the dead, the pain goes on. Final punishment of the guilty cannot alone bring peace to the innocent. It cannot recover the loss or balance the scales, and it is not meant to do so. Today, every living person who was hurt by the evil done in Oklahoma City can rest in the knowledge that there has been a reckoning. At every point, from the morning of April 19, 1995 to this hour, we have seen the good that overcomes evil. We saw it in the rescuers who saved and suffered with the victims. We have seen it in a community that has grieved and held close the memory of the lost. We have seen it in the work of detectives, marshal, and police. And we've seen it in the courts. Due process ruled. The case was proved. The verdict was calmly reached. And the rights of the accused were protected and observed to the full and to the end. Under the laws of our country, the matter is concluded. Life and history bring tragedies, and often they cannot be explained. But they can be redeemed. They are redeemed by dispensing justice, though eternal justice is not ours to deliver. By remembering those who grieve, including Timothy McVeigh's mother, father and sisters, and by trusting in purposes greater than our own, may God in his mercy grant peace to all; to the lives that were taken six years ago, to the lives that go on, and to the life that ended today.โ€

Grocery prices are out of control. Since 2019, theyโ€™ve risen by 31% ๐Ÿ›’๐Ÿ“ˆ Meanwhile, this year Coles & Woolworths pocketed a record $2.23 billion - in just six months! The Vic Greens will take 30% off your essential groceries by introducing publicly-owned, local supermarkets.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Coles and Woolworths supermarket profits have risen mostly because of larger sales volumes, not because they've dramatically widened margins. Their reported EBIT margins have remained within a relatively tight band around 4-5% over recent years. finbox.com/ASX:COL/explorโ€ฆ
