I think ethere are definitely signs Volk's aging out. That rear hand is looking diminished, a bit slower. He doesn't have quite the speed he used to, which means he has to rely more on his reads to dominate handfighting, which could be expensive vs southpaws.

Hey booking cards with matchups of real importance and depth produces memorable events. They should do this again! Great event.

Going back to Yan / Merab, I don't think I agree with the takes that Yan's first two rounds are explicitly a technical regression.
There's a few reasons, so first: Merab wasn't just feinting more. He was tying those feints to solid, consistent handfighting where appropriate.

Never easy to analyse a fight with a wrestler who relies on pace and takedown attempts to chain their striking. Even small adjustments from them can create a lot of room vs great strikers without the striker really making clear "mistakes".

Yan struggled to get on his jab early in the fight, Merab staying outside and feinting in and out, plus the intensity of his shot entries made it tough to get his distance
Later on Yan started aggressively punishing Merab's exits and he didn't really have an answer for that. The body kicks and left hook to the body, some lovely combinations with an uppercut to stand him up and a shifting hook as he backs away.

I was concerned live as to Yan not actively jabbing early. Then I caught this & it explained a lot, as well as why so many of his adjustments involved stepping in straight on punches. So, I do have to rescind some criticism of Yan here - this was a really tricky look by Merab.

Fighters like Volkanovski and Yan remind you why you watch and appreciate MMA.
Me and @MigClass have speculated separately that Merab's cardio while still the best in the sport it's not what once was anymore. He tried to go foot to the gas the whole fight and was just not possible. He took the gamble though, something needed to be done, respect.

Between the betting lines to the blasphemous tones you’ll get for suggesting that Merab-Yan 2 could be competitive, it’s hard to find ppl making a case for Yan
I did my best in my latest via @MMAJunkie, where I try to put proper context on their 1st bout: mmajunkie.usatoday.com/story…
