Pairing or contrasting sounds with the same spelling helps students to learn and apply the “Flex It” reading strategy. “Is that a word I know?” & “What other sound could this make?” are important metacognitive questions to ask as we’re reading and require direct teaching.
How are we teaching kids how to read multi-syllable words? There’s so much front-loading that goes into this: knowing the sounds for each grapheme, recognizing the various spellings for long vowel sounds, identifying rime units, flexing both sounds and syllable breaks & much more
"Vocab instr. is the central connection pt. between the word identification system and the comprehension system." Really useful instr. moves listed in this article for explicitly teaching vocabulary FOR LEARNING (for use now & later) vs. performance.

Building self-advocacy skills for our students with ASD can be tricky and requires scaffolding. When a child has big emotions, communication is hard; however, we can still set high expectations by teaching the child the skills to self-advocate through the use of visuals.
These quick access cards are a small version of our large visuals that we use with students to advocate for when they need help, more time, how much time, if they need a break, & that they’re ready to move on. They are an essential tool for us when we’re on the fly & in a pinch.
They are well received by the kids too because there are no words required. We are learning that having the child AND the adult advocate that they are each ready to move on is a key part of this sequence. #OurBIRTTeamRocks #ItTakesAVillage
This notched card is a game changer and helpful tool to learn how to read. J is learning to read using the “blend as you read” strategy. Today was the 1st day he tried using it on his own and did a great job isolating the first two sounds and then adding a sound each time👏🏻🙌🏻
Decodable vs predictable texts. This is WELL worth a read, especially if you have struggling readers you’re supporting. “While there are many ways to figure out what a word might be, there is only one way to read it.”
New Blog:
"We undermine phonics instruction when we hand children predictable books because the texts are purpose-written to show children that predicting words is a viable alternative to sounding them out."

Visuals help build independence.
If a student can look at a visual to follow a routine rather than be prompted by an adult through a routine, they are more independent.

Giggle of the day after our fractions as division lesson the other day: “Ms Hainer, LOOK at how many crackers my dad gave me compared to how much cheese there is🙉!!! Man, he REALLY needs to brush up on his fractions.🤦🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️” I chuckled so hard at her genuine disbelief #tldsblearns
We problem-solved using a 3-Act task to introduce and to think about fractions as division. Was incredible to see lightbulbs go off for us through the use of intentionally selected manipulatives and repeated opportunities to practice. #tldsblearns #NoMoreLeftOverCrackers
Proud of you @KUHoops and how you grinded, but so sad for my bracket😒 😭. #MarchMadness2019

Placing note values and fractions on a number line. A little bit of music, a little bit of math and actually a whole lot of fun! @infoAlexandraPS @bwilrock
We give @PearDeck an A+! We loved drawing and writing on our screens, were able to ask clarifying questions of others’ work, and had fantastic discussions as a result of the visuals. We asked great clarifying questions & had fantastic discussions. #TLDSBlearns
