When a student arrives in class and you can tell *something* isn’t right, I nonchalantly sidle up and discreetly ask, ā€œSick, sad or sleepy?ā€ It’s a low risk way to open the conversation and shows them that you actually noticed their mood changes and care. Builds the connection.

For a while, it was challenging to access West Virginia phonics lessons, but there seems to be a new version that includes new decodables, an activity guide, and a teacher guide. marshall.edu/eltac/resources…

The impact of not being able to read proficiently on our students' mental health isn't always evident, but as a parent, I witness this struggle daily. Everyone has the right to read. #dyslexia

Children's brain activity looks different whether they are reading narrative or informational text--no surprise that classroom research suggests our instruction for these genres should be different too (e.g., purposes established for reading, text structures taught, ?s asked...)

New research challenges conventional wisdom about grade retention. There is now "substantial evidence that grade retention in elementary school can be an effective lever for improving student outcomes. But..." (the "but" is important) fordhaminstitute.org/nationa… 1/3

I'm on a @PamelaSnow2 fix! ā„ļø Every individual deserves the right to read. The consequences of lacking this skill are immense, especially for our children and students.

Nothing sucks the joy from reading like not knowing how to read. NOTHING… That will not change by having cozy rooms or by doing fun reading events & assemblies or having book fairs. The 1 thing that gives every child a chance to fall in love with reading is learning how 2 read
