During this Customer Service Month, a section of UDB’s top management led by our Managing Director, Dr. Patricia Ojangole, paid a courtesy call to Soroti University in Soroti City, in the Teso Sub-region of Eastern Uganda.
The visit was an opportunity to further discussions on Soroti University’s accommodation project under UDB’s University Accommodation Programme. Through the Programme, the Bank seeks to strengthen the provision of accommodation in Uganda’s public universities, using a model in which UDB jointly develops projects with each university and crowds in additional investors.
The Programme reflects the transformative shift in UDB’s role, from lender to originator, structurer and mobilizer of development finance. Beyond extending credit, the Bank has built capacity to prepare catalytic projects, provide transaction advisory services, crowd in local and international capital, and connect a pipeline of bankable projects with investors.
Established in 2019, Soroti University offers six programs to 1,900 students, the majority of whom are privately sponsored. However, accommodation for both students and staff remains a key bottleneck that limits enrolment, poses security risks to students who reside off campus, and hinders self-study, especially at night. The proposed project would address this gap by providing approximately 2,000 student beds and 100 staff units.
“We are developing university accommodation through joint venture partnerships, an innovative model in which the Bank and each university’s holding company co-own the facilities. We consider accommodation a priority because it makes education holistic. The Programme covers all public universities in the country, spreading development to every region,” Dr. Ojangole said.
Prof. J.R. Ikoja Odongo, the Vice Chancellor of Soroti University, said: “Parents expect us to take care of these students until they complete their studies. The accommodation program will avert crime and will make the university more attractive to both staff and students.”
