Batman’s villains are so good that they don’t even need Batman to sell a story. Joker has carried an entire film franchise, Penguin got an acclaimed series, and now #Clayface is getting his own spotlight. That’s the difference. These characters aren’t interesting simply because they fight Batman. They’re interesting because of who they are, what they believe and the worlds they bring with them. Batman doesn’t just have a great rogues gallery. He has villains who can become the main attraction without him. Spider-Man’s gallery isn’t touching that level.
