✦ THE WRITER'S DESK ✦ Entry No. 02 The Label Doesn't Write the Story Fanfiction, Spin-offs, and the Question of Literary Credibility There's something about the term fanfiction that has always bothered me. Not because I believe fanfiction is inherently inferior to traditionally published fiction. Quite the contrary. I've encountered fan-created stories that were genuinely impressive, sometimes even more compelling than the official material they were based upon. What bothers me is the baggage that comes with the label. Because let's face it, fanfiction doesn't exactly enjoy the greatest reputation. And I don't think that reputation appeared out of thin air. A considerable amount of fanfiction is driven by personal gratification. Shipping characters who were never romantically involved, rewriting events to produce a preferred outcome, imagining confrontations between popular characters, or placing familiar personalities into increasingly ridiculous situations. Now, there's nothing inherently wrong with any of that. People are entitled to enjoy fiction however they please, and writers are equally entitled to explore whatever scenarios interest them. But I would argue that when these particular forms of storytelling become what people most readily associate with fanfiction, they contribute to a rather unfortunate perception. That fanfiction is somehow less serious, less ambitious, or less deserving of consideration than officially published fiction. And that's where I take exception. Because there's an important distinction between writing a story simply to fulfill a personal fantasy and writing an original narrative within an established fictional universe. Both may technically qualify as fanfiction. But their creative objectives can be dramatically different. Consider the concept of a spin-off. An established fictional universe becomes popular enough that its creators decide to expand it. New characters are introduced. New locations are explored. Entirely new storylines unfold, sometimes with little direct involvement from the original cast. We generally have no difficulty accepting these productions as legitimate additions to their respective franchises. But imagine an independent writer attempting something similar. They create an original cast, develop new conflicts, explore previously untouched corners of the fictional world, and construct a narrative that respects the established setting. Without authorization from the rights holder, that work is classified as fanfiction. Give that same project official approval, and it could become a licensed spin-off. Now, obviously, authorization matters enormously from a legal and commercial standpoint. I'm not suggesting otherwise. But here's my question. What does that authorization actually tell us about the quality of the storytelling? Absolutely nothing. An official production can suffer from terrible writing, incoherent characterization, manufactured incompetence, and narratives that contradict everything that made the original material compelling. Meanwhile, an independent writer working within the same universe might produce something thoughtful, carefully researched, and narratively consistent. Yet one carries the authority of an official franchise, while the other is often dismissed as fanfiction. That distinction has always struck me as rather absurd. Not legally, of course. Copyright exists for a reason. But creatively? A corporate stamp of approval doesn't magically transform poor writing into good storytelling. And the absence of that stamp doesn't automatically make an independently written story worthless. This is something I've thought about extensively while developing my own Jurassic Rescue series. When I began writing it, I wasn't particularly interested in creating romantic relationships between established characters or arranging events simply because I wanted to see my favorite personalities emerge victorious. I wanted to tell new stories. I wanted original characters with their own motivations, histories, relationships, and ambitions. I wanted to explore the consequences of events within the Jurassic Park universe while preserving the qualities I admired in Michael Crichton's original novels. The scientific speculation. The suspense and horror. The moral and ethical consequences of human ambition. And perhaps most importantly, characters whose intelligence and competence weren't arbitrarily sacrificed whenever the plot required something terrible to happen. That was my objective. Not to replace the original stories, but to explore what other stories might exist within the world they established. And yes, technically speaking, that makes Jurassic Rescue fanfiction. I understand that. But I don't particularly enjoy the assumptions that sometimes accompany the classification. Because I believe we should judge stories by what their authors actually accomplish, not simply by whether their work carries an official license. Does the narrative make sense? Are the characters compelling? Does the world feel believable within its established rules? Do events have meaningful consequences? And, most importantly, does the story give its audience a reason to care? Those are the questions that matter to me. None of them can be answered by looking at a copyright notice. I don't expect everyone to enjoy fanfiction. I certainly don't expect everyone to enjoy my particular approach to it. But I do think there's something worth reconsidering about how quickly we dismiss creative work based on the category it occupies. Because storytelling isn't made meaningful by a publishing contract, a corporate endorsement, or the prestige associated with a particular label. It's made meaningful through the thought, effort, imagination, and craftsmanship that go into creating it. And while a familiar fictional universe may provide the foundation for a new story, that foundation doesn't determine whether the story built upon it is worth experiencing. The writing does. Because at the end of the day, a label can tell you where a story came from. It cannot tell you whether that story is worth reading. In Scriptis Veritas. #WritingCommunity #Fanfiction #BookTwitter

Last song for the album I plan to release. Lot's of people are willing to listen and talk, but what do you do when the things that eat at you the most can never be spoken? What if it's not the words that matter but the actions, and the actions you need never come? I do hope you'll give this song a listen, because it is the one and only glimpse I'm willing to give into how I truly feel inside.

See the game and notice the deception. In this poll you either agree with him or you take an indefensible position. What makes it a grift or clout chasing is the execution. Are they vetted? What is the format? Are you going to let each other talk and answer each other’s questions in good faith? This is the difference between grifting to an audience and having a conversation. There’s a lot of bad faith execution you can do with someone who disagrees with you. One of the biggest reasons things like “change my mind” by Stephen Crowder is recorded instead of live is people would come up to the mic and grandstand or not want to have a conversation. They wanted to do stupid shit like read a poem about how Charlie Kirk got killed. If you watch Stephen’s debate with a Havard professor (which he destroyed) the professor would talk in platitudes, tell stories, talk slowly, and intentionally try to avoid answering the questions made. To me this is also grifting. From what I’ve seen from TT he doesn’t have the ability to have good faith conversation so him specifically would be grifting or clout chasing. He usually takes the low road every time.
Do you think that inviting people who disagree with you onto your show is grifting or clout chasing?

Where have you been? Men have been doing this since the inception of the internet, it will always happen, and there's not even anything wrong with it until you're actually trying to fuck someone. And who cares about the husbands who let their wives get lewd in front of thousands of gooners on a regular basis. You're worried about the very lady-like cross dresser, and not the cum junkies in the audience? Give me a fucking break 🙄
