In many households, a small separate house is built for the boy next to his parents’ home. Other young men from the area who have already undergone the rite then visit him to offer cultural teachings and advice — a practice known as giving *kirira*. In Elvis Maina’s case, however, the visit turned deadly. A group of youths who came to see him began harassing him. They forced him to eat excessive amounts of food and subjected him to severe physical bullying. Reports indicate that the 14-year-old was beaten so brutally that he suffered critical internal injuries, including a ruptured colon. While being assaulted, Elvis tried to defend himself, but he was already weakened by bleeding from the circumcision site. He cried out for help, yet no assistance came. He had been living in his grandmother’s homestead. His family is now seeking justice. This case brought back a personal memory from 2013. I travelled from Busia to Murang’a to visit a school friend who had just been circumcised. We were only 12 or 13 years old. A group of Kikuyu men aged between 17 and 25 questioned us. When we could not answer their questions, they prepared a cup of aloe vera for each of us and insisted we finish it. The tradition of offering *kirira* is meant to guide and mentor a young man into adulthood. It should never involve violence that ends a life. We hope the young men responsible for Elvis Maina’s death will be arrested and held accountable. Rest in peace, Elvis.
