🛡️Joe Wicks @thebodycoach said ADHD can be caused by diet, and I'm going to defend him. 👨‍🍳I have ADHD, and changing to a ketogenic diet MASSIVELY improved my life. 🧐Does it work for other people? They tell me it does, but we are also going to study this properly in @UniofOxford next year. 🧠Ketogenic diet plus MetPsy.com coaching for ADHD with depression. Are you excited for the results?

ADHD can make everyday tasks feel difficult, even when you’re motivated and know exactly what needs to get done. Could part of that struggle relate to how the brain uses energy? I explored that question with psychiatrist @GeorgiaEdeMD, including what we know so far about nutrition and ketogenic therapy for ADHD. 🧵

Today marks a historic milestone for metabolic psychiatry! Baszucki Group is launching the Global Network for the Advancement of Metabolic Psychiatry (MetPsy), alongside a $20 million investment to establish the McLean Center for Metabolic Psychiatry at McLean Hospital, a Harvard Medical School affiliate. For years, I've argued that mental disorders can be understood as metabolic disorders impacting the brain. Advancing this field requires rigorous scientific research, innovative clinical care, and education and training to bring emerging discoveries into clinical practice. This investment will help advance all three. I'm particularly excited to be leading the education and training initiatives at both McLean Hospital and MH². We'll be developing clinical case conferences, journal clubs, symposia, CME programs, and other opportunities for clinicians and scientists to learn, collaborate, and help shape the future of metabolic psychiatry. I am deeply grateful to Baszucki Group for their extraordinary commitment to this field and to the many researchers, clinicians, patients, and families who have helped bring us to this moment. Patients deserve better treatments, and together, we have an opportunity to transform mental health care. Read the full announcement: mh2.health/announcement/x

🔬 At Oxford, Ally co-leads the Food for ADHD and Depression (FAD) trial. The study is designed to compare two 16-week dietary programs in 100 adults living with ADHD and depression. Results are still to come. 🎙️ Hear Ally discuss the trial with Dr. Bret Scher: metabolicmind.org/resources/…

Could ketogenic therapy help symptoms of ADHD? 🧠 October is ADHD Awareness Month, and with an estimated 15.5 million U.S. adults living with ADHD, there's plenty of reason to raise awareness. Established treatments can help, yet many continue to struggle with symptoms and side effects. 🧵👇

Interesting study. I've long wondered what the real brain glucose limits are, especially considering experiments like Drenick's (discussed in my last blog post mostly-fat.com/2026/10/no-yo…) in which fasted subjects were made drastically hypoglycemic with insulin and were fine.
"The brain must have glucose!" That's what we've all been taught. Our new study is the first evidence suggesting it may not. We kept slices of mouse brain alive in fluid with no glucose and only the ketone BHB as fuel. After 4 hours, the mitochondria were still producing energy, and the tissue could repeatedly trigger and recover from spreading depolarizations, an electrical wave that takes a large amount of energy. Tissue given no fuel couldn't. In a living person, how much glucose the brain uses mostly reflects how much is available, and ketone uptake rises as blood ketones rise. Any small remaining glucose need is met by the body's own glucose production. The evidence is clear that the brain needs energy, not dietary carbs.

There's Pharmaceutical Psychiatry, and then there's Metabolic Psychiatry. Guess which worked for @MrAllyHouston ? When he ate nothing but McDonald's burger patties & fried eggs for the month of McTober, Ally felt fantastic.

This was a fantastic podcast about why beef prices are up. Highly recommended. tl;dr: 1. Beef processors are not the problem. They're losing money. 2. Beef supply peaked in 1975 (!). 3. Beef supply is down in a cyclical manner, we're at a low point and it takes years to rebuild. 4. 3. is largely due to small producers leaving the market, likely family operations where the kids don't want to keep it going. They interview the CEO of King Ranch, the largest beef producer in the country. freakonomics.com/podcast/her… @Freakonomics @SBakerMD

I spent the recent months analysing thousands of posts from women describing the same thing: not feeling like themselves. Now I've built something. Wellness apps come in two flavours. Technical dashboards that make self-care feel like a tax return. Or pastel cheerleading that hands you a patronising sticker. MyPatchly is neither. It's a slightly strange 1930s cartoon garden that grows when you notice things: food, sleep, energy, mood, focus. There are fun characters in the garden. Sunny is sensible. Crow rolls his eyes. Worm is optimistic regardless of the evidence. The unusual part of this launch: I don't know yet whether it works. We haven't run the beta. It's a hypothesis built from years of client work and a lot of noticing. So I'm not looking for customers. I'm looking for co-conspirators: people who'll use it, watch what happens, and tell me what we've got wrong. First beta opens 1 October.

I always thought your "order a Big Mac no bun" when in the UK was one of the best pro tips ever. Kept me very well fed through many a food desert. So much better than the "which Tomahawk do I order?" posts. Nobody seeking health or wellness should be "meat shamed" due to budget.

Dolly Parton, her parents and siblings doing a version of “In The Pines” in 1976, a song long associated with Lead Belly but whose origins predate him…likely came out of a hodgepodge mix of songs from Southern Appalachia.

An excellent resource that allows dialogue before a nugget is formed and stored. I have found it incredibly helpful for tackling difficult concepts that could take weeks of research. Even using multiple AI input/outputs to bounce ideas around before reaching consensus 👍
