Get this man some yellow stockings. I will see him cross-gartered. β€œDost thou think, because thou art virtuous, there shall be no more cakes and ale!?”

When you love a writer as a child/young adult you think that they belong to you specially. Because I thought Lewis was mine, I thought that Jesus could be mine too, or that I could be his.

I’m convinced that had I not been a very regular visitor to Narnia (via the books) for the past thirty years, I would have ended up enjoying this film. Alas, I have, and Gerwig’s worldview is too far from Lewis’s & her visualisation too far from mine for me to expect to like it.

I’ll watch it with a desire to be wrong, but I won’t play these stupid games. I won’t pretend to like it just to prove I’m more thoughtful than Matt Walsh (I can do that simply by not selling footage of myself yelling at clouds) & I won’t pretend that a bad adaptation is heresy.

I’ve been reading these by @MichaelHorton_ on my train journeys recently, and maybe it’s just that I don’t have my ear to the ground anymore, but they are far too prescient & well-thought out for me to have taken 2 years to hear of them! Spread the word!

His examination of the divine self offers a crucial caution against Christians becoming gladly excited about the β€˜respiritualisation’ of the West. Anyone seeking to β€œhave understanding of the times, to know what [God’s people] ought to do” will be blessed.

The history isn’t (for the most part) overwrought, which is essential for cultural exegesis - it’s not generally helpful to say β€œoh this is just Platonism/Gnosticism” but pattern recognition is vital. Buy these and wait eagerly for vol 3

The art of being appreciated on X is in appreciating other people on X
This is some of the best advice I’ve seen on this website

The tune itself isn’t melancholic. What we hear is a sharp Beauty, and we experience melancholy because it is a Beauty we now live East of. It soothes us because the Beauty whose echo we hear is our home. It is good for our souls to head West with the sun: back towards Beauty.
thought: the best lullabies have melancholy tunes. discuss!

This feeling is universal because it isn’t eschatological - it hearkens back to a shared past, not forwards to a possible future. The Christian cures melancholy with Hope, but Hope is sharper for the taste.

No one should lift weights without first having atrophied for several years.
No one should read philosophy until they reach adulthood.

The more train delays I’m subjected to, the more ridiculous my slide show will become.

Sat on the floor between train cars somewhere near Leeds. (Cruelly, I’m likely within spitting distance of my beloved brother whom I haven’t seen in over a year.) Anyway, the slides are getting worse. It was all swish and professional when I left this morning.

Ten things Christianity offers that world longs for… which Christians should hold onto more tightly and hold out more readily. With devotional accompaniment from George Herbert. (This started as a blog series, but in the delay, it may bless you as a devotional challenge)
