A newly released peer-reviewed study presents the results of the first nationwide homeschool achievement study in 15 years:
“A Nationwide Study on the Academic Achievement of Homeschool Students and Parents’ Reasons for Homeschooling”
Among the findings:
Homeschool students scored 29 percentile points higher in reading than the norm group
25 percentile points higher in language
25 percentile points higher in math
26 percentile points higher in social studies
27 percentile points higher in science
The study also found that student achievement was generally not associated with family income, parent education levels, or whether the teaching parent held state teacher certification.
Dr. Brian Ray of @NHERI_Research National Home Education Research Institute joined me on my podcast this week to discuss this study and the findings:

Crazy idea. Hear me out. It's summer break and when I'm at the park I can't tell AT ALL who is and who isn't homeschooled. I can tell which kids have involved parents and which kids don't, though. That's easy. It's like when I was a classroom teacher and it was the easiest thing in the world to see which of the kids were read to at home and which of the kids weren't.
It doesn't matter if your child is homeschooled or goes to school, they still need parental involvement in their education. Might as well be in that "teacher/parent mentality" no matter what. You're their first, best, and most important teacher. You're their primary teacher. You're their most consistent teacher.
Let's start talking about getting ALL parents more involved in their children's education instead of focusing on labels about "what kind of schooler are you"?

If you want to play video games, build Legos, collect comics, watch anime etc…as a grown ass adult then do it.
Don’t let anyone tell you what hobbies you should or shouldn’t have.

Read to your kids. Teach them how to read using phonics. Keep reading to them and have them read to you. Make sure they read daily. If you can read, it's no guarantee that your child will be able to read. Make it happen.

the dark secret of homeschooling is it allows nerdy parents an excuse to do educational activities “for their children”

You ARE smart enough to homeschool.
Parents are their child's first, best, and most important teachers.
If you can read - you can homeschool.
It's getting easier and easier to teach children every year (which makes results from government schools especially shocking).

People hear homeschooling and imagine recreating a public school classroom at home. That’s the mistake. It’s not about hours logged or credentials. It’s about intention, focus & presence. Education doesn’t have to be institutional to be effective. Also, no one says it’s easy. We’re saying it’s worth it. Parenting was never meant to be convenient. It was meant to be conscious.
Unpopular opinion: Homeschooling is way more doable than people pretend. It doesn’t take 8 hours a day or a teaching degree. A couple focused hours can change a child’s entire future. You can work full‑time and still do it. At some point we have to admit the truth: our kids need protecting. And if that means parents stepping up, rearranging life for a season, and choosing the harder path now so our children inherit something better, then that’s the cost of love.

Let me tell you about homeschooling preschoolers and early elementary aged kids, especially after you’ve calmed down after your first child and no longer try to replicate the public school system that you grew up in.
You are cuddled up in various places…the dining table with not an inch between you, the living room couch, blankets on your laps, the picnic table outside where you’ve gone to get some vitamin D.
Day by day, you stare into the eyes of your beloved child as they unlock the magic of reading. One letter at a time, one precious student on whom to focus.
Thirtyish minutes after you open your book for the day, they are finished with “school”, and your little love is allowed to play in the dirt, explore your home, hear books read aloud, and be in on what it takes to run a household. The sounds and smells of home are their schoolyard.
You would have to pry this lifestyle out of my cold, dead hands.

I solve this “problem” by being my kids principal and just not asking anyone’s “permission” to do anything
