ALT The image is the label text for the portrait image. Title: The Boy Scout (1935) Artist: Charles Roodhouse Bernard Statham grew up in High Lane near Stockport. The painting shows him in the nearby hills of the Peak District. Bernard was an only child and Scouts gave him a large friendship group. He learnt lots of skills at Scouts including bird watching, a hobby he enjoyed for the rest of his life. His Scout troop made annual camping trips to Windermere in the Lake District. The ribbons on his shoulder are called patrol knots. The colour combination of green and purple show he was a member of Woodpecker Patrol. He has a range of Scout accessories including a staff which could be used to measure distances as well as being useful when exploring the outdoors. He also wears a sheath knife and a whistle attached to his white lanyard. Donated by the family of Bernard Statham (1922-2011) In loving memory.
