Caught a kid passing notes today. Turns out they were notes of encouragement to her writing partner #tcrwp

My dad was 12 when Emmitt Till was murdered, and he didn’t know because no one talked with him about Emmitt Till.
White parents, you are talking with your teens about what’s going on right? Change the legacies of silence.

Adam Toledo should be with us.
Daunte Wright should be with us.
George Floyd should be with us.
Breonna Taylor should be with us.
Ahmaud Arbery should be with us.
Philando Castile should be with us.
Tamir Rice should be with us.
So many more...
How long, Oh Lord, how long?

Thinking of Daunte Wright's family. Thinking of the greater Minneapolis community. Thinking of all the Black folks who wake up to this news again and again and again and again and again. Thinking of the toll is takes on your body, the air it pulls from your lungs. Every time.

A security guard tailed me on my walk home tonight. He demanded if I lived there because “you look suspicious.” I showed my keys & buzzed myself into my building. He left, no apology. This is the reality of black girls: One day you’re called an icon, the next day, a threat.
Wow, a fantastic @washingtonpost piece by @nnekamcguire . We live in a contradictory society that can celebrate a black girl poet & also pepper spray a 9 yr old. Yes see me, but also see all other black girls who've been made invisible. I can not, will not, rise alone.

Hey parents and caregivers! You have the power to opt your kid out of standardized tests. #optout.

Please don’t claim to care about the mental health of students then mandate standardized tests in the middle of a pandemic.

Claudette Colvin challenged bus segregation before Rosa Parks, and it was her lawsuit that eventually made it illegal. But, respectability politics and colorism in the movement erased the legacy of a dark-skinned and fiery teen mom who wasn't "the right image" for the struggle.
At 15 years old, Claudette Colvin refused to give up her seat nine months before the now-historic Rosa Parks moment. But like many others, her story was excluded from history. cnn.it/3pMa5AI
The kids and I are loving this Bite-Sized Black History podcast + coloring book series from First Name Basis. Check it out! firstnamebasis.myshopify.com…
I love everything about this assignment one of my 4th graders just turned in. Why do we have no ice cream in my house right now... #tcrwp

Carter G. Woodson was a devoted historian who refused to turn a blind eye to Black excellence. He is the reason the U.S. celebrates #BlackHistoryMonth each February on.natgeo.com/3reKyB3

For real though, support your local youth arts orgs.
There are hundreds of thousands of young people with this kind of game that need the opportunity and mentorship.
Volunteer. Judge a slam. Sit in the audience so they can see the impact of their words. 🙏🏿
Distance learning is not my fave, but so many of our kids are thriving. And watching & discussing inauguration in real time on Zoom together this morning surrounded by our aunties, baby brothers, pets felt so special. These 10 yr olds are brilliant. The future is bright, folks.

Amanda Gorman. Her words leaped and danced and shook our bodies and set our souls straight. Though we grieve, we grow. Though democracy is delayed, it is not defeated. Yes, sister. Yes. We shall leap and dance and shake our bodies. We live, we here. Thank you, Amanda. We here.

There’s an Amanda Gorman at every HS you call underperforming, inner city, and/or the G word.
