Proficiency rates are a mess, and accountability is necessary. However, school choice alone doesn’t address the challenges within public education. Maryland should continue investing in teacher compensation, classroom resources, and targeted academic interventions. The priority should be strengthening the schools already in place.
🚨 MARYLAND REPUBLICAN CHALLENGES WES MOORE OVER SCHOOL CHOICE AS BLACK STUDENTS CONTINUE TO STRUGGLE IN MATH
On Maryland Emancipation Day, Republican Delegate Mark Fisher challenged Gov. Wes Moore’s education policies, arguing that families should have greater freedom to leave persistently underperforming public schools.
Moore commemorated the November 1, 1864 abolition of slavery in Maryland. Fisher responded by drawing a controversial comparison between historical bondage and modern restrictions on educational choice.
▪️ 14.9% MATH PROFICIENCY: Maryland’s 2026 results show only 14.9% of Black students statewide met math proficiency standards, compared with 42.2% of White students.
▪️ BALTIMORE’S STRUGGLES: Just 9% of Black students in Baltimore City demonstrated math proficiency, despite improvements in statewide test results.
▪️ SCHOOL CHOICE: Fisher argues that families should have more alternatives when their assigned public schools consistently fail to deliver acceptable academic results.
▪️ EXISTING SCHOLARSHIPS: Maryland’s BOOST program continues to offer limited private-school scholarships for eligible low-income students, with approximately $9 million identified for the 2026–27 program.
▪️ FEDERAL OPPORTUNITY: Maryland has not yet opted into a federal scholarship tax-credit program scheduled to begin in 2027, leaving an important school-choice decision unresolved.
Fisher’s comparison is his political argument, not a historical equivalence between slavery and public education.
The measurable issue remains student achievement.
If Maryland’s education investments are working, when will proficiency gaps narrow substantially?
And should families have more educational options while waiting for those improvements?

I like being the way i am, a little distant from everyone, direct when necessary, with a serious face, I don't talk to just anyone, nor do I try to fit in where I don't want to be, and the truth is I am calm and at peace like this.
