Spring is officially here and I’m interested in how Stemphylium Leaf Blight overwinters because it requires a host. Onion leaves break down quickly so common weed species in the Holland Marsh that don’t break down quickly could be part of the answer. – at Bradford West Gwillimbury, Ontario

I’m growing onions for a controlled environmental study looking at different leaf wetness durations and temperature for SLB. This data will be used to help create a disease forecasting model – at Guelph, Ontario

The claim is that SLB causes premature leaf dieback which can lead to reduced yield. I did a yield assessment test that claim. Stay tuned for more results!

As the majority of the onions in the Holland Marsh and my research trial have lodged, we are seeing more sporulation of Stemphylium leaf blight. This is not surprising at the end of the growing season. – at East Gwillimbury, Ontario

“Lodging” has started in my research trial! This is when the leaves of onion plants fall over and the onion bulb uptakes the nutrients from the leaves to size up. This means disease ratings are almost over for me, and that harvest is happening for growers in the Holland Marsh

Researching Stemphylium Leaf Blight at the Muck Crops Research Station. This fungal pathogen causes premature leaf dieback resulting in reduced bulb size and quality. I’m researching different spray timing models to try reduce the amount of fungicide sprays needed each season
