Why don’t Irish people want to live in apartments? Only 13 per cent of Irish households live in the country’s 230,000 flats or apartments. In Europe, nearly half of all households live in an apartment or flat.

Belgium restored nuclear power output
Belgium’s two remaining nuclear reactors are back online, restoring 2GW of reliable power after months shut down.
Under Bart De Wever, the government has also scrapped the nuclear phase-out law and lifted the ban on new reactors. Concrete action to reverse the damage inflicted by energy-illiterate fools.
Germany threw away more than 20GW of nuclear capacity under Merkel, enough to supply roughly 30% of its electricity.
Not just IMHO, 8GW can still be recovered at minimum cost and in short order. Merz must halt dismantling and launch a serious programme to restore capacity - asap. Removed equipment can be replaced. Political paralysis is a choice.
That’s the difference between De Wever’s pragmatism and Merz’s catastrophic inability to correct past energy mistakes quickly and decisively, even with a highly capable Katherina Reiche as energy minister.
Well done, @Bart_DeWever and team.

België en @ENGIE_energie zijn erin geslaagd de kerncentrales Doel IV en Tihange III in een half jaar volledig te reviseren, alle veiligheidsprocedures te doorlopen en weer op te starten. Terwijl sluiting gepland was.
Dat is een applausje waard, vindt u niet?

There is no veto.
We don't seek the approval of the UN. That is a self-imposed precondition. The UN neither approves or disapproves of what decisions Ireland makes on this matter.
And nobody, Russia, US, etc gives a proverbial about what Ireland decides, one way or the other.
The "Triple Lock" is an obscenity that undermines Ireland's sovereignty when it comes to decisions about security and defence.
The TL gives the power of veto over decisions made in Dublin to Russia, US, China, UK and France. rte.ie/news/ireland/2026/102…

HMRC has quietly sent hundreds of letters to wealthy people asking them to reveal what they own. Not what they earn or what tax they've paid, but what they own.
Here's what's going on. A unit called the Wealthy Team covers anyone with "incomes of £200,000 or more, or assets equal to or above £2m in any of the last three years". That's about 850,000 people. The letters ask for a meeting to discuss "sources of wealth", "future intentions", trusts, companies, family arrangements and even "significant life events" you expect in the coming years.
It is presented as voluntary, but there's a nudge: "We may still need to carry out compliance checks on your tax returns. However, speaking with you first may help avoid this."
Until now, inspectors have usually only asked about income and earnings. Experts call this a "sea change". One lawyer asked the obvious question: "does HMRC have a right to know what someone owns and not simply that they have paid the right amount of tax?" A tax adviser said: "No other G20 country asks for this level of detail from its taxpayers about what they own."
So what is it for? Advisers suspect it is groundwork for an exit tax, a charge on your wealth for leaving the country. As one put it: "Building that knowledge could indeed be part of moving towards an exit tax."
You don't have to be a billionaire to see the problem.

Imagine you have a lovely apartment in Rue de la Republique in Paris.
Your apartment is on the 4th floor so you don’t think you are at risk from the rioters.
Yet they set fire to a huge bin and start throwing electric scooters into it. The explosion destroys half of your apartment.
Of course we were. We're always being pressured by someone, usually more than one someone. It's how we play the one against the other to get the best result for ourselves, that's the art of being Ireland.

Franco would have just been sitting there thinking of the Peninsula War, and how Spain could have been used by the Allies to prosecute another one.
He'd have been nuts to go along with Hitler, and he didn't.
Franco made the Führer wait.
October 23, 1940, Hendaye station. Hitler’s train sat on the Spanish-French border while Franco’s was still rolling.
When the Caudillo finally arrived, the most powerful man in Europe had already been left cooling his heels. The meeting that followed dragged on for nine hours of circular demands, territorial shopping lists, & polite obstruction.
Hitler wanted Spain in the war, Gibraltar, the Mediterranean, a southern flank against Britain. Franco wanted grain, oil, French North Africa, & time. He got the last of those.
On paper Franco was prepared to honor the war. He had accepted Axis aid during the Civil War, shared anti-communist rhetoric, & kept the door open. In practice he treated the alliance as a transaction he had no intention of completing on Hitler’s terms.
Spain was exhausted, its army thin, its ports vulnerable. Joining would have been suicide dressed as gratitude.
What made the stall personal, not merely strategic, was the deeper contempt. Franco was a devout Catholic who had built his regime on the Church.
Hitler’s private remarks about Christianity, his open scorn for its “Jewish” origins, its universalism, its refusal to kneel to race, were known in Madrid.
Franco had no interest in subordinating Catholic Spain to a movement that treated the faith as an obstacle or a temporary tool.
The waiting, the endless conditions, the refusal to commit: these were not only military prudence. They were the behavior of a man who disliked the person across the table & saw no reason to hurry into his war.
Hitler left furious. He later said he would rather have several teeth pulled than negotiate with Franco again. Spain stayed out. Gibraltar stayed British.
The meeting at Hendaye remains one of the cleaner examples of a weaker power using delay, faith, & national interest to refuse a stronger one, without ever quite saying no.

The head of Ireland's data centre lobby has claimed the sector is falling victim to “conspiracy theories" and “disinformation" originating in American politics.

For the people who think they are recreating 1968 for a new generation, this stuff is catnip.
For those who grew up in a world created by the generation of 1968, including those they hope to recruit to their cause, it may not feel like the liberation they think it is.

BREAKING MAJOR RESCUE OPERATION UNDERWAY OF THE NORTHWEST OF IRELAND
A major search and rescue operation is underway of the northwest coast of Ireland around the center of #stormboelo this evening following distress calls from big Russian tanker carrying diesel.
The UK Coastguard is coordinating a response to an Inmarsat-C Distress Alert from vessel MYRA.
This potentially one of the Russian ships heading to the USA with Diesel . I hope there is no leaks as it would be a environmental disaster.
The Irish air corps and Coastguard don't have the capabilities to provide cover due to the range the tanker is out
𝗢𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗔𝗟 & 𝗦𝗔𝗥 𝗔𝗦𝗦𝗘𝗦𝗦𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧
Given the extreme distance from mainland coastal stations (beyond typical shore-based rotary SAR operational radius without offshore refueling) and current sea states, direct surface intervention by coastal rescue craft is technically constrained.
Standard Search and Rescue protocol in this scenario relies on:Alerting nearby commercial traffic via GMDSS broadcast.Deploying long-range fixed-wing maritime patrol aircraft (such as RAF P-8A Poseidon) for top-cover monitoring and communications relay if required.
This rescue operation is ongoing as off 20:57

A distress alert from tanker MYRA led UK Coastguard to alert nearby vessels for assistance but no major rescue was underway; the ship continued sailing and trackers reported it in ballast (empty), not carrying diesel, en route to Egypt.
