For “Ordinary People” read “retired middle classes”. Tutting to the tune of Peters and Lee’s “Welcome Home”.

We are creating a number of new lectureships in our Faculty. One in infectious diseases, which includes AMR, pathogenesis, vaccinology, whatever takes your fancy…. Come and join us. bristol.ac.uk/jobs/find/deta…

You can’t import education (like coal). And universities are not government run.
If you think that UK universities’ incomes only come from undergraduate tuition fees then you don’t have much to add to this debate. Though if you’re earning money to tweet, please do carry on. Wouldn’t want you to suffer hardship. Will just mute……

Solidarity to my UCU colleagues whether you are able to strike or not. And to those striking in other sectors. I’m striking against the devaluation of a profession, which can only damage the UK’s research infrastructure and ability to educate.
CAN ALL UCU MEMBERS PLEASE RT THIS THREAD - WHAT A DAY Firstly - I have to say well done to every single member and representative of the UCU. I saw your tweets and messages from 05000 and we are still going now. I’m on Newsnight at 2230. #ucuRISING

Just force every small animal vet to marry a bacteriologist who studies AMR. Worked a treat in my household….

If Twitter goes down (unlikely): I’ve had a few laughs, admired a few people and showed off a bit, but mostly it’s been awful and I’ll use my spare time to regrout the shower.

For World antibiotic awareness week I’d planned an UG practical about how gene expression is key to resistance phenotype. But I’ll be on strike because universities - where clever people work - can’t fathom how to pay their staff properly and provide decent pensions….

Replying to @Winni_l08
@Winni_l08 continuing her international speaking tour. She’ll be in a country near you very soon, probably.
Absolutely enjoyed giving both my talks today at the Genomics and Infectious Disease session this morning! Thanks @ISID_org, it was a great experience! Thanks also to @MutantBug, @gemma_langridge, @LangridgeLab, @MedResFdn_AMR & @MedResFdn for the support! #ISIDCongress2022

They’re off galavanting again. Reporting work on AMR in Argentinian Farms, Bristolian Bloodstream Infections, and the oldest provincial zoo in the world.
Some of @MutantBug lab members (@jordanesealey, @MounseyOliver & me ) at #ISIDCongress2022! Want to know more about the bacterial genomics I've been doing in my PhD & placement @TheQuadram? Come to both my talks in the Genomics & Infectious Disease tomorrow at 10:30am! @ISID_org

Back at the Bristol Old Vic for the last theatre trip of the year. Stand up from @jessicafostekew and should still be OK for a 9am lecture on cloning tomorrow.

Advert for our fully funded BBSRC PhD project aiming to understand how cold plasma affects AMR bacteria. Happy to answer questions about the project/lab/supervision etc but you can follow the links in the advert for more general queries and to apply. findaphd.com/phds/project/re…

Unless you believe each patient is entirely bacteriologically unconnected then you have to consider the overall soup. Personally, if I was a meropenem salesman and everyone instigated this approach, I’d be booking a new Porsche for delivery in mid 2025.

In terms of overall quantity it’s probably a “shot or stabbed” discussion. But there will be a clever answer somewhere involving maths. It’s the focus on 3GC use that worries me. Can’t do anything (according to my brain) except make the bacteriological soup more unpalatable.

You have until 5pm to apply for this fully funded MRC PhD aiming to suck more AMR data out of routine diagnostic MALDI spectra. Genomics, molecular bacteriology, data science, clinical diagnostics.
You might also want to apply for this fully funded MRC PhD with Dowsey, Feil, Bayliss and me to be part of our programme of genomic/proteomic AMR prediction research. But you’ll have to be quick as the deadline is 2nd November. gw4biomed.ac.uk/doctoral-stu… gw4biomed.ac.uk/wp-content/u…

My gut: don’t do this with an abx where: R rates are already non-trivial R mechanisms diverse across multiple species R genetically linked with virulence genes in some cases R genetically linked with R to other critical abx. Short term gain maybe, but long term pain likely.
