"Beautiful football backup field, all started by Cement Gillespie!" Daniel Gartner finishes off another quality long range try by the Sea Eagles - this time v Parramatta in '94 - with David Gillespie and Steven Menzies combining to put Craig Hancock in the clear and the winger found David O'Donnell in support and his inside pass to Gartner is a beauty. Thoroughly entertaining footy by Manly. πŸ“Ί Manly v Parramatta πŸ—“ Round 12, 1994 #WinfieldCup #NRL

πŸ’₯ The Tongan Torpedo Martin Masella gets quick retribution for Steve Edmed's broken snoz... and gets sent off by Eddie Ward. Terry Matterson had smashed Edmed's nose halfway across his face and got put on report, then the next set Masella whacks Andrew Gee in the head after passing the ball and is given his marching orders in this Balmain v Brisbane clash in Round 7, 1994. Not 100% sure on the full length of Masella's suspension but he didn't play for the Tigers again until Round 13. πŸ“Ί Balmain v Brisbane πŸ—“ Round 7, 1994 #WinfieldCup #NRL

Remember when a referee would give a penalty for a forward pass? Found one from '87. And this one from Kiwi halfback Clayton Friend isn't even that blatant - but New Zealand referee Neville Kesha gives Australia the penalty with no hesitation. πŸ“Ί Australia v New Zealand πŸ—“ 1st Test, 1987 #WinfieldCup #NRL

πŸ¦… "Manly like attacking from their own end of the field... Cliff Lyons is a master of it." Do they what! Manly produce a long ranger of some quality, with Craig Hancock making a long break (and getting outside of Brett Dallas) and then passing back to Danny Moore, who has to soccer the ball through to regather and score v Canterbury in Round 9, 1993. Moore turns 55 today, Happy Birthday Danny! πŸ“Ί Canterbury v Manly πŸ—“ Round 9, 1993 #WinfieldCup #NRL

πŸ† Canberra's only Premiership winning coach, Tim Sheens, turns 76 today. Leaving Penrith, Sheens took over at the Raiders in '88 when Wayne Bennett accepted the Brisbane job (and Don Furner stepped down) after the '87 campaign had seen Canberra finish runners-up to Manly in the decider. He led Canberra from '88-96 - with the Raiders making 4 Grand Finals ('89-91, '94) and winning 3 of them, as well as making the Finals in every season bar '92. Sheens won 67% of the 219 games he coached in First Grade at Canberra across 9 seasons, and he added a pair of pre-season titles ('90 and '93) to his 3 First Grade Premierships in '89-90, '94 and lone Minor Premiership in '90. Happy Birthday Tim. πŸ—“ 1989 #WinfieldCup #NRL #RugbyLeague

πŸ‡³πŸ‡Ώ "The Kiwis are in again!" An absolute beauty of a try from New Zealand puts them ahead of Australia in the one-off Test Match at Lang Park in '87. Dean Bell makes the big break (and great pass), and Gary Mercer turns Dale Shearer inside out to score. At ground perspective on #RLWC26 opener: - NZ didn't put Australia away when they had the ascendancy. Mistake. - Australia capitalised on mistakes big time, attack wasn't showing much til Dearden replaced Moses. - Kangaroos' aerial superiority telling. - Ponga/Walsh tries 😍 #NRL
