This past Valentine’s Day, 71-year-old Brad Reese, proud grandson of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups inventor H. B. Reese, posted a scathing open letter to the manager of corporate brand and editorial at Hershey, accusing the company of unforgivably altering many Reese’s products by replacing real chocolate with compound chocolate — basically using vegetable oils instead of cocoa butter to lower costs and replacing real peanut butter with “peanut-butter-style crèmes.”
“And Reese wasn’t alone in feeling like everything was getting worse,” writes Rachel Handler. “Everyone in my life I spoke to agreed that something was amiss, that Reese’s — and commercial chocolate in general — didn’t taste the way it used to.”
Handler would spend the next several months tumbling down a chocolate vortex, encountering dozens of eccentric characters, all disagreeing about the fundamental question of what chocolate even is and who it should be for.
“I learned that — not to sound like a LinkedIn guy — what’s going on with chocolate is a parable for the modern world. That at this particularly bleak end stage of capitalism, everything we once treasured has or will lose its essential essence and MrBeast will always be involved somehow.”
For our cover story, Handler takes a deep dive into the molten belly of the chocolate world. Read it in full: nymag.visitlink.me/vKKky_

Until recently, Max Miller, the 37-year-old Republican congressman from Ohio, has gone somewhat under the radar — a former Trump protégé, moderately effective in Congress, and little known outside Washington and Ohio. But over the past five months he’s entered the national stage through a series of alarming allegations. As he summarized it in August: “I’ve been portrayed as an abusive husband, an abusive father, and a violent man.”
His ex-wife, Emily Moreno, the daughter of Republican senator Bernie Moreno, has accused Miller of throwing her against a wall, scalding her with boiling water, and holding a gun to her head. This winter, Miller was investigated after their two-year-old daughter was discovered to have a broken collarbone.
Miller is in many ways a middle-of-the-road Republican. His constituency, taken as a whole, is likewise red but moderate. Some of the biggest towns in his district area swung for Obama in his first presidential run. Miller won his seat comfortably in 2022 and 2024, and the district currently leans Republican by five points. For Miller, the election on November 3 is most likely to hinge on what voters believe and feel about his personal story.
Miller has many times called his situation, and his ex-wife’s claims, “sad,” painting the experience as a painful ordeal. His recent legal filings had described the toll as “significant ongoing mental distress, fear, anxiety, emotional harm, and fear for safety, reputation, and parental rights.” But at a recent deposition, roughly a month from election day, Miller appeared, writes Heath, to be having fun.

For a few years, Elizabeth Holmes was everywhere. There she was on the cover of ‘Forbes’ in 2014, wearing heavy eyeliner and a black turtleneck, holding a vial pinched between her thumb and her index finger. For ‘Inc.’ magazine, she kept the turtleneck but dropped the vial, added a faint half-smile, and crossed her arms over her chest. She was the world’s youngest “self-made billionaire,” the celebrated founder of Theranos and inventor of a device that could use a single finger prick to test for hundreds of conditions.
The black turtleneck does not appear in ‘You Can See Everything,’ the blockbuster new documentary from Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim. Instead, a softer and more domestic version of Holmes takes over the screen. She wears neutrals and goes barefaced except for mascara; she often holds a baby, the youngest of her two children with partner Billy Evans. They live in a rental on the beach. In this setting, her blonde frizz makes her look more like a busy mom than a prodigy in charge of her own image. “But as there was a knowingness to the younger Holmes’s image, there is a knowingness to how she presents herself in the film,” writes Sarah Jones. “This is the real Liz, Evans says, but is it?”
