You’re looking at 25 hectares of living green wonder. Planted in 2023 under the Tamil Nadu Green Mission, the mangroves of Kudikadu village in Cuddalore District now stand as a thriving bioshield along the coast. After clearing invasives like Prosopis juliflora and creating fish-bone tidal channels, 25,000 mangrove saplings were planted followed by another 20,000 in 2024-25 through linear and block planting. With over 90% survival, Rhizophora is flourishing while native Sonneratia apetala and Bruguiera gymnorhiza have been introduced successfully. These mangroves are stabilising riverbanks, helping fish nurseries supporting livelihood of local communities. Many of us may never have seen a Madras Hedgehog, Striped Hyena, Lion-tailed Macaque, or Hump-headed Mahseer. Yet, these unseen and often forgotten species are critical sentinels of our biodiversity and ecology. Silent, elusive, and vanishing , they remind us of the fragile balance of nature. At TN Forest Department we have set up a dedicated Endangered Species Conservation Fund to protect them as announced by the Government of Tamil Nadu. This fund will restore habitats, enable vital scientific research, and bring local communities into the heart of conservation efforts.

As part of our ongoing Restored Glory series, we bring you another gem of Hyderabad’s heritage — the Saidani Ma Tomb, a son’s devotion immortalised in stone.
Commissioned by Nawab Abdul Haq Diler Jung in memory of his mother, Saidani Ma — a woman deeply respected in the Nizam’s court — this monument near Tank Bund beautifully blends love, history, and architecture.
With its intricate stucco, jali screens, and lime plaster detailing, the tomb reflects Hyderabad’s rich Indo-Islamic heritage. Conserved through the joint efforts of HMDA, Department of Heritage, and Aga Khan Trust for Culture, it continues to inspire generations.

“Maratha Military Landscapes of India” comprising 12 forts (11 in Maharashtra and 01 in Tamil Nadu) declared a world heritage property at the 47th Session of the World Heritage Committee, being held in UNESCO Hq., Paris. With this India now has 44 properties on the World Heritage List.
