#OTD October 26, 1947 – After World War II, transport ships carried American war dead from the European and Pacific theaters returning 6,251 bodies. The fallen troops were returned to U.S. soil via the Brooklyn Army Terminal to be returned to their families.
A procession later made its way through New York City. More than 400,000 New Yorkers lined the streets of Manhattan standing in silence to witness the procession.
