In yet another major blow to the TPLF’s hopes of reviving itself, Major General Yohannes Weldegiyorgis (aka John Medid) has reportedly been captured by the Ethiopian National Defence Force (ENDF) in Tigray.
A member of the TPLF military’s Central Command, he led the Southern Front, which launched an offensive on the Kobo front on September 23, aiming to advance swiftly toward Addis Ababa. Before moving to Tigray to join the TPLF rebellion, General Yohannes commanded the ENDF’s Western Command, headquartered in Bahir Dar.
Reports emerged a few weeks ago that General Yohannes had been sidelined amid suspicions surrounding the rapid collapse of the front under his command. It remains unclear whether he surrendered to federal forces, was found in hiding, or was captured on the battlefield.
