तत्त्व को 'तत्व' और महत्त्व को 'महत्व' लिखा जाने लगा है, (केंहिनि)। तर्क दिया जाता है कि उच्चारण दोनों रूपों का समान है। किंतु शब्द रचना के घटकों पर विचार करें तो तत्व, महत्व सिद्ध नहीं होते। दोनों की संरचना इस प्रकार है-
तत्+त्व= तत्त्व
महत्+त्व= महत्त्व
त्व प्रत्यय वाले अन्य शब्दों में त्त्व नहीं होगा, क्योंकि तब वह स्वरांत शब्दों से जुड़ रहा होता है, जैसे –
लघुत्व, गुरुत्व, मातृत्व, देवत्व, मनुष्यत्व आदि शुद्ध हैं।
