He said he started working on The Name of the Rose at almost 50 because he had a midlife crisis and was worried he'd go crazy and divorce her.
So he thought "Ah I like British murder mysteries -- The Murder at the Vicarage! -- I should just start writing novels."
The rest is literary history. Thank you Renate!

I really think everyone needs to pay attention to this cordinated campaign to delegimatize Muslim Americans - not just as citizens but as humans.
These increasingly hysterical attacks are a prelude to Republicans bringing us to a very, very dark place after the election.

"Whether individually or collectively, people almost always act with more than one intent; a test requiring only one intent misunderstands human behavior. Nor does the ICJ’s formulation require a single intent."
The Gambia v. Myanmar case before the ICJ will test legal propositions central to assessing whether Russia's war in Ukraine constitutes a genocide under international law, write Anastasiya Donets, Susan Farbstein and George Tyler.

Recalls the memorable end of “A Face in the Crowd “—but maybe these people are being paid & that is why they endure the abuse.

Welp I know what I’m doing for the next month.
Tomorrow we're releasing a full UATX course for free: all 19 lectures of Professor Isabella Reinhardt's Rise and Fall of Ancient Rome, filmed in class with our students.
It runs from Rome's mythical founding to the Third Century Crisis. It ends on a question the class spent a whole session arguing about: did Rome ever really fall?

An important essay by David Armitage, reflecting on the intellectual roots of his landmark book, The Ideological Origins of the British Empire (2000), published 25 years ago. He reconstructs and reconsiders his own contribution and arguments and the scholarship that was produced on the subject since its original publication. It was an inspirational book for me when I started to work on imperial ideologies in the history and theory of International law in the Americas back in 2007. Really worth reading!

“The easiest thing for a political leader to do is to appeal to our bigotry and our hatred and xenophobia and prejudice, and point to people who are unlike us and say they’re the ones who are damaging our country," Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., August 5, 2016 on Larry King Now.
There was a time when I completely agreed with my brother. Today, I am deeply ashamed of him.
Arab and Muslim people alike have made extraordinary contributions to the world across literature, science, mathematics, medicine and countless other fields. To name a few, Omar M. Yaghi won the Wolf Prize in Chemistry in 2018 and the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2025. Ahmed Zewail won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1999, and Naguib Mahfouz won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1988.
A person’s race, religion, ethnicity or socioeconomic background does not determine their intellect, creativity or capacity to contribute to humanity.
My thoughts are with all those hurt by my brother’s false, cruel and derogatory words.

Exactly what we need in the absence of a functioning U.S. Department of Justice. An organization of ex-prosecutors and investigators who help can put cases together for current and future prosecutors who will restore accountability for corrupt federal officials and those who benefit from that corruption.
We are facing a crisis of impunity. That's why we built The Rule of Law Project — to investigate unlawful conduct by federal officials, and work with state and local prosecutors to hold them to account.
Watch former DOJ prosecutor Mark Blumberg and human rights leader Brad Adams launch this critical accountability initiative on MSNOW with Nicolle Wallace.

It should confuse everyone. It's why nobody takes MAGA Christian faith seriously. It's insane to pretend to care for migrants and then elect someone who has build an entire political empire on demonization and dehumanization of migrants. It makes your gospel look small and stupid
