Thank you @HanaaTameez for a great interview!
NEW: I talked to the creators of @ASATNshow about comedy, explaining complicated stories, and why they traded in secure futures as business school grads for careers in making news videos.
One of my fav interviews so far in the Creators of Record series!

NEW: After our reporting, Meta removed “train” from its upcoming commercial terms. But the terms still allow broad website scraping and could potentially supersede robots.txt.
@decka227 and I followed up with the experts: niemanlab.org/2026/10/legal-…

NEW: Virtually every news organization has a Meta business account. Meta’s new terms say it can scrape websites “associated with” those accounts—and use the content to “train” its products.
Me + @decka227 on what this means for publishers: niemanlab.org/2026/10/metas-…

This is a great interview with an independent sports journalist who creates highly-produced narrative videos for TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube Shorts. These don’t just consist of a guy talking into his phone camera — it’s obvious that he puts a lot of work into researching, illustrating, editing, and scripting these videos. “Right now, my niche is not news,” he said. “By the time the algorithm serves you my stuff, the news has happened. My niche is finding what’s interesting about that news or what’s underreported, and delivering a compelling narrative.”

For @NiemanLab, @HanaaTameez writes, “Would you send it to the group chat? Sports creator Frank Michael Smith on finding the stories worth telling.”

Trump wants the media to call Lake Ontario "Lake America."
But it hasn't worked with the "Gulf of America." U.S. news outlets — even the ones that Republicans prefer — have been steadily increasing their preference for "Gulf of Mexico."

So if you have a news subscription, your renewal email may have some interesting fine print. Take a minute to read it and let me know what you find:

I spent the World Cup double-checking Messi family “death” rumors, fake Mourinho quotes, and AI-generated photos and videos.
I wrote about how misinformation steals joy (and time) from the beautiful game and what it means for all of us who still live online during big moments:
