Three years. A tribunal. An apology. Damages.
All for women to secure something that should never have been controversial: the right to undress away from members of the opposite sex.
The law is clear. Yet too many institutions still have to be dragged towards compliance.
Meanwhile in Wales, when I pressed the Deputy First Minister on implementing women’s sex-based rights, she suggested I “write to the EHRC”.
Perhaps she should read this instead 👇
I’ll be scrutinising her again in the Senedd next week. I’ll remind her: women’s dignity, privacy and safety are not negotiable.

🚨 Breaking: After a three year battle, County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust has finally changed its policy on single-sex spaces for staff to bring it in line with the law.
It is amazing how simple it is! Now all NHS Trusts must urgently follow suit.
Bethany Hutchison, President of the Darlington Nursing Union and lead claimant in the case, said:
“This short sentence in a policy has taken women three years of fear, humiliation and extraordinary personal sacrifice to secure.
“We were nurses asking for the most basic protection: somewhere private and safe to undress at work, away from members of the opposite sex. Instead of listening, the Trust told us to compromise, broaden our mindset and be more inclusive. We were forced out of our own changing room, placed in inadequate facilities, threatened with disciplinary action and made to fear for our jobs and professional careers.
“Vulnerable colleagues were put under intolerable pressure. International nurses feared losing their visas. Women who had experienced domestic abuse were left distressed and afraid. Four of us were reported to our professional regulator simply for speaking publicly about what was happening.
“Throughout it all, the Trust defended a policy it had been warned was unlawful. Even after the Supreme Court clarified the law, it refused to change course. It took a full tribunal judgment, an apology, damages and an enormous bill before the Trust finally wrote biological reality into its policy.
“We welcome this change because it will protect women across the Trust, but it should never have required a three-year legal battle. No nurse should ever again be treated as we were for asking for dignity, privacy and safety.”

I have read some suggestions that police officers who take their own lives while under investigation do so because they “cannot face up to their guilt”.
That is an extraordinarily simplistic and dangerous assumption.
It also betrays a profound lack of understanding of just how punitive, protracted and opaque the process of holding police officers to account has become.
I have worked in Policing Professional Standards. I believe absolutely in holding police officers to the highest standards. But accountability without due process is not accountability.
Research has examined the psychological impact of misconduct investigations on officers who were ultimately exonerated. That fact alone should give people pause before casually equating distress with guilt.
An allegation can mean suspension, professional isolation, reputational damage, family and financial pressure, and months or even years of uncertainty. For a police officer, their profession is often a significant part of their identity. Being removed from it while an allegation hangs over them can have profound consequences.
And being cleared does not simply put everything back together.
Some officers will never return to the operational confidence, professional identity or psychological wellbeing they had before the investigation began.
Exoneration cannot return the months or years taken from them. Many will never get promoted again no matter how competent they are.
Police officers must be accountable for wrongdoing. Equally, the institutions investigating them must be accountable for how they investigate.
Due process, timely investigations, transparency and procedural fairness are not protections from accountability. They are what makes accountability legitimate.
Clarity, not alarm. Recent warnings on preparedness have left families uncertain and some shelves empty. Official ‘Be Ready’ advice is for a modest three-day kit for disruptions. If the risk is broader, state it plainly. Proportionate communication protects confidence.

Flintshire residents: now you know where you rank.
@reformparty_uk Cllr Helen Brown brought forward the motion giving @FlintshireCC the opportunity to put local residents, transparency and community concerns first.
All party groups - including Labour - chose the “Nation of Sanctuary” ideology instead.
They voted. The record is there.

🚨 DON’T TAKE REFORM’S WORD FOR IT. LOOK WHO’S BACKING THE ECONOMICS.
The Adam Smith Institute - an independent, non-partisan free-market think tank, ranked No.1 globally among independent think tanks - says Reform’s alternative budget contains proposals that can finally get Britain growing again.
⚡ Energy security
🏠 More homes
✂️ Less crippling red tape
📈 Planning reform alone with the potential to raise long-run GDP by 7.05%
Britain IS getting poorer because it has been catastrophically mismanaged.
Labour will tax us poorer. The Tories governed us poorer.
@reformparty_uk is putting forward a serious plan to make Britain richer again.
This isn’t protest politics anymore.
It’s a government in waiting 🇬🇧
"Reform's alternative budget released today includes many proposals that will finally get Britain's economy growing again.
Abolishing the Energy Profits Levy will play a crucial role in ensuring the country's energy security, which a recent ASI index ranked below Romania and Ukraine. Windfall taxes undermine the incentive on firms to be ready to drill when prices are high: without them, the UK's domestic energy supply will be far more secure, and the country will be less vulnerable to price hikes and energy crises. It will also lower electricity costs at a time of eye-wateringly high energy prices, which will cost the average family an extra £206 in the coming year.
The alternative budget's proposals will also give a desperately needed boost to housebuilding. Leaving the Aarhus convention, which paralyses planning reviews and raises costs for developers, will make it easier and faster to build new homes. Repealing Biodiversity Net Gain rules will also reduce costs and delays for housebuilders, 94% of which have been hit by delays due to the rule.
Taken together, these changes will mean more houses are built faster and for a lower cost - which will go a long way to solving Britain's housing crisis. If done right, planning deregulation like those proposed by this alternative budget could single-handedly raise long-run GDP by 7.05% - a rise of almost £3,000 per person."

Douglas Carswell understands something the political establishment still refuses to accept:
Britain cannot be rescued by tinkering around the edges.
Our borders, economy, public services and institutions need fundamental reform, and the machinery of government must once again answer to the people.
His blueprint for national recovery makes a compelling case for the scale of change @reformparty_uk is offering Britain.

Genuine question: what IQ does Labour think its voters have?
Because you’d need remarkable faith to keep voting for a party that taxes your income, your car, your fuel and now wants a system capable of taxing every mile you drive.

27 years of Welsh Labour Government and North Wales is still the only region in Wales without a 50-metre Olympic-sized swimming pool.
This is not an oversight. It’s the result of decades of regional underinvestment.
Now the Plaid Minister responsible for sport says she needs a *review* to identify the gaps.
Here is one: talented North Wales athletes are crossing the border into England to train because facilities available in South Wales simply don’t exist here.
We don’t need a review to spot the gap. We need the political will to close it.

More observations from my recent visit to Wrexham Maelor Hospital.
Post-operative patients having to be wheeled long distances to recovery rooms is not conducive to good recovery. Patients and staff deserve a building that is fit for purpose.
As a member of the Senedd’s Health and Social Care Committee, my priority is ensuring that our NHS works for patients and supports the staff on the ground.

So Andy Burnham wants an “honest conversation” about restoring free movement? Fine!
In 2024 alone, 1,177,232 people acquired EU-country citizenship, 88% were from non-EU countries.
Over the decade to 2024: around 8.4 MILLION citizenship acquisitions.
So @AndyBurnhamGM, here’s the honest question:
Why should an EU government be able to confer a right to live in Britain that the British Government cannot refuse?
Brexit returned that sovereign decision to Britain. And now you want to surrender it again.

I’m in direct contact with current and former Betsi Cadwaladr staff. What they are telling me corroborates the serious concerns being raised publicly by this doctor.
@BetsiCadwaladr has been in heightened escalation for 11 years.
Yet at a recent meeting with the Board, we were treated to glossy PowerPoint presentations painting the usual “everything is hunky-dory, all is well” picture.
That is not what staff are telling me.
And when @NigelWilliamsMS asked the Cabinet Minister a perfectly reasonable question, after 11 years of failure, why not bring in the best expertise available from outside Wales? - we didn’t get a serious answer about improving patient care. We got a lecture about devolution.
Devolution should be a means of delivering better public services, not a shield against scrutiny or an excuse for refusing outside expertise.
Patients waiting for life-saving treatment don’t care which side of the border their doctor or the expertise comes from.
They care about getting treated. Timely!
